OK, so what games can I play on the new iMac?

Man there is a lot of wailing going on about the new graphics on the iMac update. So, what games can I play? Is it only the "heavy duty" games that won't play, or will they play, but just slower? What about X-Plane? Can I play that on the new iMac? What about adventure games? I love those. Can I play those on the new iMac? In other words, what is the real-life performance likely to be? that's what really matters after all.
In the WWDC keynote, it was said that EA and ID will be developing games for the Mac. Which Mac? Just the Mac Pro? I'm confused.

Yes, I am very sure you can play X-Plane in terms of graphics performance (unless your GPU is not supported) I've played it on my x1600 on high settings and it handled it very well.

i just got my new iMac today, i will be installing the following game over the following days both in boot camp and in OSX so i will post benchies once i get some playing time in.

BF2 on XP
LOTR online on XP
WoW on OSX

Like i said one i get done setting everything i will start posting benchies

Can you get the core and memory speeds of the GPU as well?

Which iMac did you get? Will you post your spec's with the benches? Those benchmarks are what I'm interested in - good idea.

Vendetta ran just fine on my MacBook with integrated graphics, I don't see why you need the $1499 model to run it.

What I want to know is this: how well does EVE Online run on the base $1199 model?

Performance versus Geforce 8600M GT in Macbook Pro

Does anybody here have a new imac and counter strike source (in boot camp) ? If so, max out your graphics settings, antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, and resolutions, and do the video stress test.

My new Macbook Pro with the Geforce 8600M GT should be arriving soon, Interesting to compare it's performance against that of the Radeon HD 2600 Pro in the new imacs. In case you didn't know, the Radeon HD 2600 in the imac is actually a Mobility Radeon (laptop component.)

From what benchmarks i've seen so far, the 8600M is faster than the Radeon HD 2600. I was guessing that Apple would at least inculde the 8600M or 8700M at a build-to-order option.

For reference, the original Core Duo imac (256MB Mobility Radeon X1600) gets 29.96 FPS on the CSS video stress test.

yeah, thats true.
the macbook pro's resolution is 1440x900, is anyone has CS:S, thats the resolution they should use to test it.

note.. the imac i used was an old 2.0GHz core duo, and the macbook pro is the 128MB VRAM model. i'd just like to see if the imacs really do have the slower video card.

Wasn't the last BTO GeForce 7600GT a desktop card? So that would make the HD 2600 Pro a pretty big step down from the last iMac w/ a 7600, right?

Stuff like BF2, C&C: Generals, Quake 4, Doom 3 should run just about.
But those just about. Anything newer with eye candy and a decent resolution will probably leave you with a slideshow on your iMac.

Some estimates would be...

BF2 @ Max qualtity 1600x1200 35FPS
Doom 3 @ Ultra Quality 1600x1200 30-38FPS

etc.

But those are just estimates.

I was hoping to get into gaming on the imac (I was never a pc gamer), but I am now ok playing games on my xbox 360 on my 55" HDTV... I'll use my new imac for ilife and iworks...

I guess as long as the new imac can handle Dora's Adv. then my 3 yo will be happy... Apple is going for making the family happy... not the gamers...

From what I hear the graphics card will be able to handle an HD DVD drive or Blu Ray Drive which would be cool... I just recently picked up the HD DVD drive for the 360 and I was amazed by how good it was... (I paid $127)... now apple needs an external BluRay drive for the new imacs... so I can have both formats

I dont mean to burst your bubble but the 2600 pro would definitley not run BF2 at max settings and get 35 fps lol

Some undue pessimism on this thread. My old PC with a Pentium 4 and GeForce 6800 ran games extremely well. Unless you want stupidly high frame rates you'll be disappointed, but to hear comments like 'you'll be ok with anything before 2005' is silly.
