Ok to buy 2017 pro?

Will this still be a good machine for the next 2-3 years? I was considering the new, but think this is more than suitable for my needs thus a better value to me. Will it still be ‘as good’ in a couple of years? It will be used for media consumption and some drawing/art. Thanks


Edit: This question pertains to the 2017 pros only. Please no suggestions that I should get the new one or other device. That is not my question. I just want to know how the 2017 will hold up over the next 2-3 years.

I’m not looking for a deal. I expect to pay full price but want to be sure it’s going to be ok for 2-3 years with the A10. I can get a 12.9 for the price of a new 11. It’s not going to be used for anything intensive.

2017 10.5 iPad Pro is using A10X instead of A10 and this machine is still a beast. I’m pretty sure it will work fine for the next 2~3 years as it has the same 4G ram as the new 11 iPad Pro. And earphone jack on 10.5 can also be a sweet pot for some I believe.

It will be fine. But if your expecting to pay full price you might as well get the new one. You can pre order the new pro for $50 off if your a Costco member.
 
I say yes, definitely good for next 2-3 years and even more. I recently got mine 10.5 pro(refurbished - 15% off) from Apple. All the accessories were readily available and at a good price too.
One reason I love the previous gen iPad is because:
  1. It already have gestures so you don't need to click on that home button- All these gestures works wonderfully!
  2. Touch ID!- you don't need to LIFT up the iPad every time you use it. That will be annoying because I have to lift my iPhone to use FaceID and does not always work like fingerprint. normally when I am using the iPad, it is laid down.
  3. Color choices: sadly the new one only have 2 color choices.
  4. White borders- this one might only apply to some, but I enjoy white borders instead of black
  5. Pencil is cheaper BUT it does not have magnetic charging. still works just as well- just make sure when you buy a folio case to include a place to put the cap of the pencil so you don't lose it. That is the ONLY thing I love about the new device because it is more like Microsoft Surface where the pencil is held on magnetically.

I don't think the 2017 ipad pros will last a long time. There is an issue with the touch screen connector where aging battery presses against it and causes intermittent failures of the touchscreen. They knew what I was talking about and sent me away with a brand new iPad when I went to the apple store for this. I expect they will have to replace it again before the AppleCare on it is up.
 
Yes the 2017 pro will last you for two or three years. People still use the air 2. The processor in the new iPad is a technological marvel, but short of heavy 4K rendering you’re not going to see many applications take advantage of that. The real appeal to me is the new form factor. But I can’t justify selling and paying a significant amount of money to upgrade my 2017 12.9 pro.

I’m on the first gen iPad Pro 12.9” model and it’s running smooth as ever. It’s my oldest Apple device and is used extensively every single day. Can’t see why a 2017 model wouldn’t last you several years.

I can add on a few more points being a 12.9 2nd gen user

6. Has 3.5mm headphone jack, can make or break some people's workflow
7. Uses Lightning port, can take advantage of Lightning accessories (especially if people start selling theirs)
8. You can charge the Pencil separately from the iPad with its supplied female-female Lightning connector

No they are all toxic. An iPad is only good for 6 months. If you want to keep your health this is not the device you want. Why do you think they have new models? These have corrupted millions and many are suffering and will never recover. I hope it is not too late. Take Care

I want to use it to draw and the laminated screen would be preferable not to mention it just looks better. Also my needs may change and I want something with more power/RAM than the inexpensive model provides.

The gen 2 has the newer screen technology with no air gaps in the laminated screen. This massively reduces glare so the device is far easier to use outdoors. When my Kindle gave up on me a little while back I didn’t feel the need to replace it because of this, and recently I was sat on the beach reading using my 12.9 :D
 
Beware of the 10.5 screen white spot issue which is recurring and widespread issue ... as myself heavily invested on 2017 version which must now get repaired

The 2018 iPad still has an air gap, it is not laminated.

Remember the 2018 iPad is $249 on Black Friday from numerous retailers. The display difference between the two IMO is not worth $400, maybe $50-$100 at most for me.

Unless you can find the iPad Pro for a couple hundred off, this is a very difficult value proposition.

Yes I know that! I was just ensuring that post #19 didn't confuse the OP by saying gen 2 had the laminated display, if gen 2 was referring to the 2018 iPad

Edit: and did you just assume OP was a he? :cool:
 
Just FYI, I sold my 10.5 which i loved. I did, it was a great device, but that was the 2nd one after I had the screen white spot develop on my original one. I exchanged it at the apple store and that replacement also developed the white spot after six months or so.

I sold that 2nd replacement a few months ago as soon as i got it and have been waiting for the new ones.

Im sure not everyone one has the spot develop, but i would not get one personally because of my recent experience with it.
