Is it ok to jump from Mojave to Big Sur or Monterey? Apple is bugging me to install Monterey!
Have Super Duper and CCC backups. 2017 iMac 10.14.6 512 SSD 16gb

Yeah, it's ok to jump to Monterey. That is, you don't have to install a previous higher version than you have to get to the newest version.

But, if you have any 32-bit applications, they will not run on anything higher than Mojave.

BE SURE that the apps you have will work "after the jump".

I would also suggest using either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to create a cloned backup on an external drive before you take the leap.

If something goes wrong, CCC or SD make it easy to "get back to where you once belonged"...

I have the same machine as you and the same questions. After cloning my internal SSD and making a full TimeMachine backup AND testing it, I let Software Update go from Mojave v10.14.6 to Monterey v12.2.1. Took about half an hour and from what I can see works just fine.

I've gone back & forth about 20 times in the last few months. There are some bugs in Monterey, but if I don't need to print, or run parallels, or use the Wacom, or have the audio work with my external display, or do much in the finder, then Monterey is pretty slick. But ultimately I keep going back to Mojave, bc 100% everything actually works perfectly there, and it'll still run a few 32bit apps that zombie companies never updated besides, like Moog device controllers and Quicktime 7 for doing nondestructive linear edits. Considering it'll just be a couple more releases and Apple will cut all the intel machines off from any more OS advancements anyway, I've been thinking I might as well leave all the Mac stuff on Mojave, not bother with any more OS updates, and then never have to worry about all the version incompatibilities & breakages that upgrading brings.

I had an old MBP 2012 and was running Catalina, but had motor board and battery issues. I bought a new MBP 14 M1 in Oct and have spent over 10 hours the past three months talking to Apple Care trying to make Monterrey work properly. Wish I would have waited a year for Monterry to get the bugs worked out. I've owned MBP since '92 and this is the worst experience with a new MBP in 25 years. Stay away.

the Apple Salesman in the Miami Beach Apple store warned me not to use migration for the New MBP M1 14 Monterrey but I didn't listen to him....I have regretted the purchase every day.
