Okay I ordered a new toy! a lacie usb3/thunderbolt

lacie has a 128gb ssd a 256gb ssd and the 1tb hdd .

they have both cables usb3 and t-bolt.

the 128gb ssd is 199

the 256gb ssd is 349

the 1tb hdd is 249

I will tear my open and drop in a few ssds.

I have a samsung a mushkin a crucial and an intel .


If I remember this case is easy to open. But with free cables it is a big price drop.


consider a 256gb ssd for 349.00 all included.


The seagate is about 85 if you are lucky a cable is 45 that is 130 and on sale a 256gb ssd is 180 comes to 310 and no usb3. So when the 256gb comes out it may be worth getting.

Looks very appealing, but why do so many of the Thunderbolt storage options only have a single Thunderbolt port? Defeats one of the big plusses of this interface. Though I guess this is more of a portable solution so it kinda makes more sense.

this is very close to what should be available. the lack daisy chain is a non issue since it is bus powered. it needs to be at the end of the daisy chain. if and when new minis come out 2 t-bolt ports would solve most daisychain problems.

right now the 256gb ssd model would work really well for a 27 inch imac 2011 model. it would really give your machine a good speed boost as a boot drive.

Bought and opened the same (HDD version)

Bought the 1T HDD version of the LaCie rugged TB/USB 3 ext drive to be used as the back up drive of my iMac 27 which is booted by a LaCie LBD 240G RAID0 set up. All going very well, I found the the back up software supplied by LaCie (Intego BU Manager) does not make a bootable backup, so I used CCC which is OK.
Void the warranty after i week and opened up the rugged case, to my surprise the HDD is actually a pricey Samsung Sprinpoint (Momentus) 1T with 8G NAND.
Blackmagic test is consistant with what the manufacturer quoted.
Taken a photo and wonder any one here can tell if its SATA 3 or not. And if it is what is the best (fastest) SATA 3 SSD that I can put in to do some tests. Wonder if it will be better than the stock rugged SSD? or even the 240G Raid0 SSD?

I put a 128GB Samsung 830 SSD into mine and I get the same reads as LaCie says, 365MB/s....guess we will have to wait for better ThunderBolt to SATA chipsets to come out....although LaCie is now using a different chipset in the Little Big Disk to achieve the higher reads of SATA3 in RAID....

365mbs is not sata II it is sata III.

a one port t-bolt gets 10 to 20 percent under the sataIII max . the 128gb samsung max is

Sequential Read Speed 520MB/s
Sequential Write Speed 320MB/s
Random Read Speed 80K IOPS
Random Write Speed 30K IOPS


so getting 365 reads is normal in a direct sataIII connection the samsung will get 465 reads.

that is a theoretical max.


remember t-bolt has 4 chips 2 in the cable one in the case and one in the mini these slow down the max speed.


I have a few t-bolt pieces of gear. the pegasus r-6 with 3 samsung 830's in raid0 has reached 870mbs for me the limit is the controller in the pegasus I think a few people got about 920mbs with that one.


BTW I was short cash and returned the lacie rugged. I grabbed a third lacie little big disk instead.

Guess its still SATA2 max out at 3XXMB/s. Did I read somewhere that the Samsung 830 can read at 5XXMb/s in a Seagate GoFlex?
May be I can try a 3 ssd RAID0 with one 240G ssd LBD (2x120) and one rugged with a SATA2 120G SSD. What speed will you think that will achieved?

there really is not a "better" ssd then a samsung 830. just look for a deal on the 256gb sized one

amazon has one for $169.99


getting the 256gb size is important it runs best in the t-bolt powered add-ons.


the 512gb size tends to have a power issue as it draws a lot power during long writes . It also will spike at a high power draw so sometimes the ssd will drop connection on the seagate 2.5 inch adapter and possibly on the new lacie rugged both are t-bolt bus powered. the 512gb works fine in a lacie little big disk or a pegasus r6 which have there own power source.

the 128gb size will work but it is a little slower then the 256gb ssd plus it is 104 for 128gb vs 169 for 256gb
