After the horrid wait of 6 weeks with the "powerbook updates" rumor swirling around amounting to....well.... defective screen scan-ridden, un-speedbumped updates to only the 15" and 17" models which I didn't even want...... I must say... I've had enough. I need a mac portable now, and need a small one.
This leaves me to decide between the ibook and the 12" powerbook. I had a 1.33 powerbook before selling it when I was in a tight scrape for cash, and must admit I loved it. I could do most things I needed to do on it, had it upgraded to 756MB of RAM (or whatever that first one was), and it was lovely. I used it with my Motu 828II to perform with, and was heck of a lot better to use then dragging my G5 to shows (which I've done since).
Now people are saying there's not much difference between the small ibook and the powerbook 12". It's going to be hard for me to be convinced, since just the metal casing of the powerbook is probably worth it since I travel so much. But here's the big question: can I install a (preferably) 100GB 7200RPM drive in the 12" ? I know you can't do that with Apple's store, but I've read on the boards here that someone fit a 7200RPM drive in their 12". Where did they get this drive, how do you do it, and does it work well?
I really would like a 7200RPM drive since very occasionally I noticed some lag in editing on my old powerbook that certainly didn't happen when I used my external firewire. The 7200RPM drive was the single biggest thing I was looking forward to in an Apple laptop... so if anyone has any suggestions about how to rig a 12" with an internal 7200RPM drive.... please help me out. Any pointers on where to get the best deal would be appriciated as well Thanks in advance!
