Just like the title states, does your 17" MBP work fine? Do you have the issues described on this forum, like the uneven backlit on the LCD, excessive heat, whine, etc.?
I see so many people complain, I want to hear people compliment a little :)

Keep in mind that people coming here are generally doing so BECAUSE they're having problems. It may be hard to find a lot of feedback from people who are perfectly happy with it.

BTW, I'm here because I'm considering buying a MBP17 (you too?).

I actually ordered mine from the Apple Store on the 4th, estimated ship date is tomorrow (15th), hopefully it ships tomorrow, I'm getting anxious.

I understand that most people come on here to get help, but it would be nice to see how many people have no issues, so we can compare approximately how many have issues (like 1 out of 4 have issues, etc.).

Mine is fine. It only gets hot when I play games...and I've had it on for ~two days straight to get some P2P downloads in.

It only gets hot about the F-keys and the bottom isn't uncomfortably warm. No other issues (other than my obsession with the fact that the screen isn't quite flush to the case more so on one side than the other). Otherwise, it's been a real pleasure... no regrets.

(My software update icon was curiously corrupted in System Preferences, though.)

Got mine a couple of days ago - initial impression => it's a beautiful machine, nice keyboard, lovely screen - only a faint "whirring" sound from the 7200 drive's fan and an extremely faint whine if I put my ear right next to it in a _very_ silent room – haven’t noticed any heat issues yet but I’ll find out soon when I get Parallels up & running (the MBP 17 was bought to replace my PC for .NET web dev).

But when I get my current 15.4" PC laptop out (an LG so hardly a bad Dellish type thing) to compare then I really notice the difference - it's only a bit wider (same height) but much much thinner (the LG looks positively chunky n clunky in comparison) and also a lot quieter than the LG.

I really like the MBP’s minimalist styling next to PC laptops, especially the HP ones that are desperately trying to be Xmas trees. It also boots up OS X quicker than my LG (1.73 GHz Centrino) can restore Windows from a hibernated state!

BTW the “problem” some people have posted about the “gap” on one side when closing the screen is not a problem at all – I’ve noticed that the screen can sometimes close with just one magnetic latch (there’s two either side of the trackpad area) – all it takes is a little touch on the other side and the other latch engages and hey presto, bye bye “gap”

My co-workers is perfect in every way except that the recent updates screwed up the startup. Uninstalling Adobe Version Cue fixed this though.

Except from my firewire not working properly, I have no issues with noise or screen (ok the screen is not perfectly even, but it's hardly noticeable).

It does get hot when your working the processor, but under normal conditions, the CPU usage stays very low.

Generally I'm very pleased with the computer. The battery life is great (I get about 4 hours at nearly full brightness, only got 2 hours from my 17" PowerBook).

And with Parellels you can run XP, FreeBSD, Linux, FreeBSD, etc... without having to reboot, and the performance is pretty great.

The one thing that I'm not entirely happy with about the new design, is the size of the power brick. It's about 50% bigger than the PowerBooks! If you're a mobile user than it can be a real pain. I just hope that the new power bricks are more reliable than the old ones (which only lasted 6-12 months).

Mine is great. I've had it since last Thursday and no problems to report.

- The screen is bright and very uniform in brightness

- No whine

- I ran a perl loop through the terminal to keep both cores pegged out at 100% for about 5 min. The hottest its got was 83C and while it got hot above the f keys most of the heat was above both fans where the heat pipe ends. The bottom gets fairly hot during heavy use, but not even close enought to burn anyone.

- Here is my temp run down.
* At ideal it stays round 40C
* Web browsing, word processing it stays between 48-52C
* Graphical Stuff, like google earth, it stays around 60C

- It closes fine

- Getting about 3-1/2 hours out of the battery (airport is on)

ummm.....thats about it i guess :)

Nice to hear that some people are satisfied =)

It's likely the majority that are satisfied but you never really hear the good sides of the story to affirm us folk who are still waiting on ours

One week and still happy

I've had my 17" MBP for a week now and the only issue I have is that the base gets very warm and the bar above the keyboard can get down right hot. The display is fantastic. It is bright and evenly lit. The speed is great and the keyboard is much nicer than my old 15" PB. The battery life is 3-4 hours of standard use with the airport on and running OSX. Running XP cuts this down by a third to 2-3 hours.

Hopefully I can chime in with mine soon, it shipped and is in Alaska right now (Apple site for checking orders seems to be down for me, I'm sure its left Alaska by now).
Come on guys, lets keep reporting on how good these machines are :)
