Looking for some thoughts, I'm about out of ideas. I have an old 1,1 firmware upgraded to 2,1 that won't boot past the spinning apple logo. I've tried all the usual things (SMC, PRAM, reduced config, etc).

What throws me off is between two boot volumes (10.11 and a 10.7 install) neither will boot, nor will a fresh 10.7 USB installer. All get stuck at the spinning apple logo/progress bar.

Verbose reveals it seems to get stuck and different things each time.

Any thoughts? About to scrap it.

bad drive or sata port?
maybe ram, i had one 4GB stick die in my 3,1

will it boot from a usbstick with osx on, AHT may be worth a go https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest

Unfortunately the behavior is the same trying to boot a USB installer or the OS on either drive or their equivalent recovery partitions. Just a spinning stuck apple or progress bar.

Embarrassed here...followed the directions on the GitHub site to the letter but can't seem to make the USBStick for AHT bootable. I must be doing something wrong because the 1,1 doesn't recognize it at the boot option menu.

where exactly does it hang during the verbose boot?

have you tried a different graphics card and RAM as well?

I’ve tried a 5770 and a RX 280. I reduced config to 2 memory modules. It seemed to change/ random stop on Verbose. I’ll give it a hoot tonight and see exactly where.
