My 4G iPod just died for the third time and it's not coming back anymore..
Since I used it a lot (I mean A LOT) in the last four years it's okay for him
to rest, I think.

Now I'm thinking of replacing the hard disk with hopes it will be running
again. Plan B is buying a new one.

The good thing is that the new iPods have bigger hard drives. The bad thing
is the new interface. I'm still deeply in love with the old interface. Simple,
very good looking (especially with the blue backlight).

Anybody who knows if I can get the old 4G interface b/w back? It probably
won't look the same since the backlight has changed but you'll never know.

And yes, I'm serious.

As far as I know, you can only get a crippled version of the 6g interface on a 5g iPod. I didn't like the color interface at first either when i switched from the 4g b&w. Get a used one on eBay and try it out. I'm sure you'll get used to it quickly.

The only way to change the interface is through hacked software. Only older iPods with older software revisions can be hacked.

So if you wanna stick with the old interface (hey, no reason not to if its what you like!) then just replace the HDD in your iPod. While you're at it, pdasmart.com and ipodjuice.com (they guarantee their batteries for 10 years supposedly) offer double capacity batteries for the 4G iPod.

GO RETRO :D I would like to be able to do this too, but I would trick someone who just bought there shiny new ipod and revert it back to B/W graphics.

Just get a hd to cf card adaptor and then get yourself a 32gb cf card or something. Then go install rockbox and the interface of your choice and you are set.

Thanks all for the reply.

Right after the time I did the firt post, I ordered a
new iPod Classic 80gb from the Dutch Apple Store.
I just couldn't live without haha. This morning I
received it (it has been a long day, yesterday) and
after a full day playing around I'm even more
hungry for a new 4G iPod...

I think I'll leave this iPod alone (the firmware) and
get the hard disk replaced in a few weeks.

Maybe I'll get used to this new iPod thing. It's a bit
to slick for me. Everywhere there's an image,
gradients unite!
I'm still not happy with the halfscreen menu. Why is
the background of Coverflow white? Why can't I use
coverflow for my playlists? And why is the time in
standby mode not in 24h when in the title it is?
The interface feels really heavy (slow) compared to
my old 4G. But maybe there will be a fix in the new
firmware?

Enough compaining. I can also name some good stuff
on the iPod Classic:

- it has more storage
- the sound seems to have a bit more bass (no eq!)
- the headphone jacket is more tight (no sudden pauses)
- seeing the artist name in Songs is nice
- I just needed a stopwatch
- it's still an iPod
