Old Apps on the iTunes store

I am searching through the iTunes store, there are some apps I would like to buy, but they have not been updated from 2-3 years ago. I think I saw something from 2009!

Are all apps on the iTunes store mean they are compatible with all iOS/itouch devices? I remember I had a game from Gameloft that had a major issue when I updated my iOS version.

Apple with their strict App rules, should make a rule where if your app is not updated within a year its off the app store. No need for junk and half working apps.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with that rule. What about the apps that work as advertised? New features often bring new bugs and sometimes increases the size of the code base. I have an idea for an app and told friends and acquaintances about it. Those folks wanted me to add certain features and, if I implemented all of the requested features, it will have grown from a small, purpose-built, app to a huge app that tries to do everything. This is a concern with many of the apps we have today.

The lack of updates, except to keep up with the current OS version, does not mean that an app is no longer useful.

There are plenty of apps/games that haven't been updated, yet they work fine with current iOS devices. One thing you have to keep in mind, too, is that not everyone has the latest and greatest Apple gadgets.

I see what you're getting at, but what might not work for your current device might work for someone with an older phone/tablet/iOS version. Purely trial and error.

There are plenty of apps/games that haven't been updated, yet they work fine with current iOS devices. One thing you have to keep in mind, too, is that not everyone has the latest and greatest Apple gadgets.

I see what you're getting at, but what might not work for your current device might work for someone with an older phone/tablet/iOS version. Purely trial and error.

When I pay $5-$10 an app, I can't go through the trial and error process. If a developer does not care to update his app just to make sure it still works, then they shouldn't be on the app store.

Some apps still work well even though they're not optimized or updated. The checkbook register app I use hasn't been updated in a couple years but I still find it to be more useful than anything that's out there now.

I do believe Apple has a rule that apps need to be optimized if developers want to continue to submit updates.

Another reason (and maybe the main reason) Apple will never "auto delete" old apps is because then they can't brag about how many apps the app store has.

I have apps for iOS 2/3 that still work fine on my devices.

I get the reason why people want old applications to be pulled, but this isn't like a thousand people are on iOS 6 and lower, it's more like 5+ million are. My mom is still running iOS 5, and my dad is running iOS 6 - Both on the iPhone 4.

They're still making money off of all these users. And this is exactly why they still keep the iPods around aswell.

but... how about they filter the apps? When I browse with my iphone 6, how about they filter-out apps that only updated to work up to iOS5 ? Just like how I don't see iPad apps on my iphone

less cluttter, everyone knows they will get a working app, no money lost. Doom Resurrection didn't update since August 2009!!

Oh yeah, in a perfect world that would be the case. Don't see why they can't add another option considering we can filter between release dates and relevancy.

They want you to see everything so that you know about all the options basically, and that way you'd also be encouraged to upgrade in a sense.
