Hi everyone. For the last year or so I've been trying to find this old game we use to play as kids. I believe it had either arena or red dragon in the title. I know it's not Legend of the Red Dragon as that is completely text based. The premise of this game was simple.

You arrive in a town either having been robbed and start with nothing or you're a criminal that is forced to fight in the arena. You fight and earn gold and exp. Then you can buy weapons and armor and work your way up to fighting the Red Dragon. You choose an opponent by scrolling down a list and selecting the opponent you want to fight. The actual fighting is displayed in a scrolling text field that says how much you hit the opponent for and how much he hit you for (or missed, etc). The only graphics I can recal are small decals of the opponents and yourself and possibly for the weapons and icons in the blacksmith and armory.

I've always thought this was an old dos game but there is a possibility that it was an old apple/machintosh game. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone has any input on what they think it may be. Thank you very much for your thoughts and ideas.

Thank you for the reply but unfortunately that was not it. The game I'm looking for has no graphical movement of any kind. The only graphics are icons of the characters I believe and maybe icons of the weapons and armor when buying. I believe the fighting is turn based. You hit by pressing the hit button and then the opponent hits. You might be able to run away too. You can't select your character in the beginning. You just are someone who is going to fight in the arena. I recal most of the background being grey in color. Not the normal black of dos which is why I believe it may have been an old mac game.

The actual looks and orientation of the game is as follows (from what I recal): The arena (opponents to select) was on the left hand side. The main text updates were in the middle bottom that update how much you hit for, how much the opponent hit for or missed, purchases in the armory/blacksmith. The icon of your person was in the top left. The armory/blacksmith was in the top right and the weapons/armor lists were next to that. You select a weapon and hit the buy button.

I really hope someone knows what this game is. It was a really simple game and storyline (almost none besides trying to get strong enough to kill the red dragon) but it was a lot of fun. Thanks again for thinking giving your thoughts.

Man that looks so close but it's not it. Very similar idea though. I found some screenshots of the Pit at http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/pit_/screenshots and I see they had to modes or a newer version. One was more text based and the other added many more graphics. I looked carefully to see if it was the same but I'm afraid it's not.

My game was a single player only, had a mainly grey background. Just a list of warriors like a rat, orc, ogre, knight, black dragon, with the red dragon being the last and hardest opponent. They weren't broken out into groups and types of opponents. And it looks like you moved your "character" around in the arena and attacked. There is no movement in the game I'm looking for. Just buttons to attack/run or similar.

Thanks for the guess though. I really wished that was it. That's the closest I've seen yet though.

Sounds like Darkwood.

Oh my gosh! I think that's it! I'm going to have to get an emulator for it and double check but it sure looks right. Thank you thank you!
