Anyone here caught the retro gaming bug?

I recently rediscovered my love for Marathon when I found out that all three Marathon games were available with a slightly updated engine. Granted, these games are almost 10-12 years old, but they are still very, very fun. And for the price of a 30 second download, they can't be beat.

Anyone else getting back into old games they forgot about?

All free, all legal. As is Marathon. Google is good.

Also if you like old games try DOSBox, I started using it for some old DOS games that I either downloaded or had sitting around. If you want to download some, I'm not sure if it is technically legal or not so I won't put any links, but google is your friend.

good ol' abandonware, and perfectly legal :)

How is this legal? Abandonware doesn't actually exist as far as the law is concerned, and it is totally illegal unless the owners sign a paper releasing it to the public domain (unlikely due to the popularity of the series). They might not enforce the copyright, but it's still totally and completely illegal unless MicroSoft released it.

Retro games....

I'm looking at trying to get Windows 98 running in Parallels for Planescape Torment and Fallout2.

I can play wizardry 8 under bootcamp if I run it in compatibility mode, but I cannot get it working with Parallels or VMware Fusion.

On the Mac side I really really wish they still had OS9 emulation on the x86 Macs. My old TiBook's graphics chip is totally dead and I cannot play Masters of Orion any more. The Mac version rocked.

This site has been up for quite awhile and would like to think that they've done their homework.

As I said, whether or not the copyrights are enforced (which they aren't here) it's completely illegal. It doesn't matter if they've been discontinued, they're still illegal. I'm not saying your getting into trouble with it (you're not because the copyright owners aren't enforcing it) but I'm just making sure everyone knows that it is, technically, illegal. Abandonware is a term made up by people to try to make this stuff sound legal, but it's completely made up and is not legal.

I don't know about the rest, but Bungie for sure released Marathon into public domain. They handed out the source code after all

Technically you are right, abandonware doesn't exist and it is illegal, however, the guys at the Underdogs have been very careful in removing games that are still being sold, for the rest, some are legal and some aren't but from the moral perspective of things, there is nothing wrong with downloading abandonware.

If you want to be a mindless robot who will put technical rules over moral and subjective thinking then so be it, THAT is why the US legal system is so ******* ridiculous.

But I digress it really isn't my problem.

As far as the topic goes, I love replaying old games, I've been trying to make Command & Conquer 1 MAC work but my G4 doesn't boot OS9 anymore... maybe I'll look into that SheepSaver thing. Adventure games are the best abandonware there is out there :)

Oh and Marathon owns, if anyone reading this thread hasn't played that yet... do yourself a favor and download it (like right now) from the link posted a few posts above this one.

My favorite website for old (and mostly free) games is www.abandonia.com, most of them require dosbox but it's there on the website so not only do I get to play some good oldies but I also feel like I am back to MS Dos days with all the path typing :D Actually recently I played Maniac Mansion and Populous, it's kind of funny because back in the days it took me few eeks to beat those games and now it's a matter of few minutes/hours lol And you can even find original Warcraft there.
