Old Hard Drive wont eject

So i just installed an SSD into my 2012 Macbook pro (non retina) cloned it using super duper and put the old HD in a portable enclosure. now when i plug that HD into the usb I can't eject it because it says its being used and can only shut down..

Does anyone have an idea why or a fix? let me know.. this was the first time i've swapped the HD out.

I am running OSX EL Capitan 10.11.3

Does it happen invariably with the drive (meaning you can't use it at all without it refusing to eject), or is it only sometimes? And are you confident something isn't actually using the drive?

Do a format of it. If the problem persists, something is likely wrong with the enclosure.

it loads but then I had the issue with ejecting it... turns out it was a hard disk check box in power settings that didn't turn off the hard disks when possible... I just checked the box to "put harddisks to sleep when possible" and it seemed to work... my theory is that it also can be an issue since its my orig hard drive so it could conflict? Either way I plan to use this hard disk for time machine back up and completely erase it

Also just found out that in the Spotlight setting i can disable it from searching the external HD, once I did that it seemed to function ok.
