Old iMac won’t start

Could You elaborate a bit more? It doesnt Boot? No image but sound? No image no sound?
1. Open the iMac and replace it with an SSD.
2. On another Mac, go to dosdude1.com and download the Catalina Patcher
3. Create a USB installer with that Catalina patcher
4. Plug the USB to the 2009 iMac, boot from it
5. Format the newly installed SSD in APFS, GUID
6. Install Catalina to it.

It is too old for Recovery. It will not work. You will need a DVD/thumb drive of whatever operating system you are using.
OP:
If you don't have any other bootable drive, and you don't have another Mac to use, you can go on ebay and buy a "pre-made" USB flashdrive with a bootable copy of the installer on it.
There are a few sellers there who offer them, with the OS of your choice.
Just "boot it and go".
Will cost about $20 or so.
If nothing else works, I suggest you try that as a last resort.
