Before I start this thread, some of us PPC users are trying to get add Old Intel to the forums. Help us out at https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...users-post-in-here-powerpc-mac-forum.1839885/ .

Now to the point of this topic, a few nights ago in a iMessage group chat. The idea of upgrading the logic board in my iMac 5,2 came up. There is a logicboard in the iMac 5,1 that has a Radeon x1600. If it isn't obvious, this would be a major upgrade to the weak GMA 950. The question is, can it be done?

My logic may be off a bit, but if the Radeon x1600 was made before the GMA 950 then they probably just recycled the iMac's parts and just changed the x1600 to a 950 meaning all the mounting holes are the same.

I'm hoping its the same case as the Macbooks.

Thanks!:)

I don't see why you couldn't. The service manual for the late 06 is the same for both the educational 5,2 and the 5,1. No mention of any different connectors or anything that would stop you. It really was just a dumbed down cheaper iMac.

Mounting holes and connectors might be the same, but you wouldn't know without comparing the two logic boards.

Not quite that simple as a drop in GPU change on the same logic board layout - the GMA950 is integrated into the chipset, a different version to that fitted to the dedicated graphics machines. The X1600 hangs off the PCIe bus.

A bit of research and the boards do look the same. I'm gonna give it a shot, might be a bit till I get one tho.
