Hi, my sister was over this weekend and was looking at my now old iPad Pro 9.7" 32GB. It's a bit beaten up but it will run the few apps she wants, yoga, Safari, You Tube etc.
I said I would sell to her for £50. But my concern is how long will it last with updates? Will it get iOS 16? And if Apple stops updating it how long will it last beyond that before apps stop working? I don't want to sell her something that'll stop working in a year as I can sell it to someone like Music Magpie instead then, they are a U.K. company that buy and sell second hand goods.

Let's take the worst-case scenario of Apple cutting from upgrades not only the air 2 (A8X), the mini 4 (A8) and the iPad 5 (A9) but also the first gen pro (A9X), it will take 2-3 years before the first apps stop being updated (mind you, not stop working, just not be updated). My 9.7 pro is on iPadOS 13.4 and 99% of apps are still updatable (and I don't plan to ever update it, because iPadOS 15 would only make it slower). It will take 1-2 more years before a significant number of apps cannot be updated (IOS 12 cannot update a good deal of apps but most app still work fine, you just don't get the latest features). It would take a couple of years more before a significant number of apps stop working, probably more than the iPad would still function well or the battery take a charge. Remember, one of the main reasons why IOS 9 and 10 apps stopped working was the 32bit compatibility, not necessarily the OS. I would say it's safe to assume that, in the worst-case scenario, it will be another 5 years at least before a significant number of app stop working on IOS 15, probably a couple of years more than that.

Do you really need £50? Just give it to her for free. No company is going to give you any real money for an old beaten up iPad so it’s not even worth it.

Thanks but I'll sell if it I want to, she doesn't need charity as she's loaded. She just never buys new stuff. And I could do with the money as £50 can go on something else.

Thanks, great advice. Is it on the list to get iOS 16 so we know?

we'll know in a couple of weeks, at this point I would tend to say it will get 16 (but not the other 3 I mentioned). Some people say it would be cut off because of 2GB RAM but the the 2018 iPad has A10 (which is very close in performance) and only 2GB RAM too... so they may well be left behind together, especially as the bigger (and older) brother (12.9) has 4GB RAM. Could Apple leave all of these tablets behind? Sure, but that would be weird, almost a shock, and would change people's idea of "iPads getting at least 6-7 years of support etc. etc." (in this case it would be barely 4 for the 2018 iPad....)

I would say sell it for £40, somehow 50, 100, 200 etc are big numbers  ... she will be happy and won't regret to get it for £40 even if it stops supporting latest iPadOs in near future ... my 2p :)

Ah cool, I will see what happens in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the advice but £50 is fair. I wasn't asking anyone for what price to sell it for or if I should give away my devices, only if it gets updates. It's worth £57 to Music Magpie and on eBay probably more then that. I doubt very very very much in the only one who sells older electronics to other family members.

You are not alone. I sell to family and friends too. At good prices but not free. That doesn't means I cannot make a gift for no reason (couple of weeks ago I gave a Mac Magic keyboard to a friend, she asked me if I could lend her a keyboard for her laptop, her keyboard broke, and she said she liked it and she planned to buy one, so I said you can keep it). But I have sold stuff to the same person including cables, adapters etc. Some people assume that if it's family or friends you should just give everything away...
