iOS 9 once again reminds us that Apple is not a fan of old device users.

The iPad 3rd gen "New iPad" came out heavily advertised as being a huge leap forwards with processing power along with promotional 3D fighter jet games, showing it's faster CPU abilities.

Now, however, it is deemed too slow to handle the simple doodle in a note feature which has been included for the iPad Airs and such.

Meanwhile I am still able to handle multi layered high definition vector drawing and high detailed artworks in Apple's own iDraw app, as well as all the other 3rd party artwork apps.

How is it that it can be too slow to handle the tiny little doodle feature of the new notes app?

Just as it is "too slow" to handle the other new features which have come along and been withheld from old device users.
I think it's quite clear to see that our old devices can easily handle these new features, most of them at least, however Apple is blatantly trying to pull the wool over our eyes by telling us it's because our device is "too slow" or whatever, trying to insinuate that we need to upgrade.
Lest the world be content with their current device for an extra year.

Please stop urinating on us and telling us it's raining, Apple.

The 3rd Gen iPad was a dog. I owned one.

No processor advantage over the iPad 2, better graphics and a retina display but the damn thing struggled HARD with all those pixels. Plus it was much hotter, heavier and took much longer to charge the larger battery in needed.

The thing was discontinued in less than a year for the far superior 4th gen - the A6X was much better suited to the demands of the big screen.

Your assessment is 100% correct.

Unfortunately Apple is so obsessed with amassing a vast fortune above and beyond the one they've already built, they turn their backs on some of the best customers they have.

Many of those same users can easily afford to upgrade to the latest devices but choose to make a very wise decision not to, when what they have is continuing to meet their needs nicely.

The insane "Apple Upgrade Model" is the very reason sage corporate buyers won't touch Apple for their enterprise needs. Corporations don't waste money like huge numbers of individual consumers do.

There's a big difference between a highly profitable corporation, which is the goal, compared to the obscene profits of Apples Consumer Facing Mass Market Cash Cow.

It's as simple as that.

Your post is utter nonsense. First, Apple never touted the processing power of the iPad 3, as it didn't have any processor upgrade over the iPad 2. Stronger graphics, yes, which were necessary to power the retina screen. But the processing power is the same as the iPad 2, which was released in March 2011.

Second, Apple provides among the best support in the industry for older devices. Certainly way, way better support than google provides for older android models. El Capitan supports some '07 and '08 macs. And iOS 9 supports all of the A5 devices, which means 2011 dinosaurs like the iPhone 4s, iPad 2, and iPod touch 4. The iPad 2 shipped with iOS 4 and can be upgraded to iOS 9 - five OS upgrades!! Try to find that kind of legacy support on any other platform.

But no, you don't get every single new feature on your 4 year old device. Let me find you the world's smallest violin.

Dude, what u said is absolute non - sense. When u talk about android and google support to devices "it's pretty incomparable to Apples" and I know. But at the end of the 5 years of supports u are talking about, Apple leaves your device pretty unusable anymore, (ex. iPhone 4 which is unusable right now) while android the last android update leaves the device in a good usable state for more years of use even if it's obsolete. Apple support is fake, it's incomplete support just adds new features and updates but what's missing about it is the usability, the apple device comes out as junk in the end of its apple support.

Exactly. I have one still.
There was a very good reason the 3rd Gen. wasn't on the market for much longer than 6 months.

You're saying "some of their best customers" are the ones who don't want to upgrade form their iPad 3's?!?!
Right....

I'm just waiting for the Weather App, and BUILT THE **** IN calculator. Like for real its been almost 6 years. I can't have a calculator built in?! There's 1000s of calc apps on the app store. But none of them are quite the same as the iPhone version and have ads. Also I'm missing out of the ability to get to a calculator through control center.

Wanted to clarify that iPhone 4 is definitely useable, although relegated to to iPod duty. It's good for a few more years. My iPad 2 got a new shortening iOS 9.

iPod Touch 4 is not supported by iOS 9, not even by iOS 8 or 7 for that matter.

So don't update. I had an iPad 2 for 3.5 years and never moved it past iOS 6. Ran wonderfully until the day I sold it. But some would rather lose performance to get the features. At least Apple gives you the choice.

Why would anyone think that supporting new features on old devices is a goal any company should have. Gee Windows 10 should be supported on a Tandy TRS80. Do you think a 4 year old TV should be able to support 4K and then 8K pictures?

Want capability - expect to have to use modern technology - and today modern technology is < 1 year old

Your expectations are unrealistic. Just because Apple allows a newer version of the operating system to be installed doesn't mean that it's a good idea. It's up to the user to make the decision. Of course, you could switch to Android, and get no OS updates, or get updates that are open to almost limitless exploits.

This is not only non-sense, it's not even readable. No one in the comparable period of personal computing would have expected support for five year old hardware. The fact that Apple enables you to make this choice yourself is a positive thing, but it assumes that users will make intelligent decisions.

You should count your blessings that iOS 9 runs as well as it does for your antique iPad 3.

I installed iOS 9 on a discarded iPad 3 from work and was surprised that performance had actually improved.

Bite your tongues for just a bit longer, iPad 3 owners. I loaded the first two betas of iOS 9 on mine - an LTE model on VZW's network and was pretty happy with the performance, then the performance tanked a bit for the rest of the betas and the GM IMHO. I started spending a bit of time reading up on the newer iPads...

I opted to load the 9.1B4 FW and am much happier with my iPad 3 now; the only app that's lagging now is Instapaper but only over the LTE connection. I'm waiting to see what comes of "thinned" apps. 9.1 will bring back a bit of luster to your trusty old tank of an iPad... Maybe the thinned apps will drop a pound of weight? (kidding!)

In addition to that, Android makes no promises that the newest version of their OS will be equal to or greater than previous versions of their OS. Nobody can. This "issue" is also in Android. I used them for a many years and every major update to the OS slowed down the phone.

And it is by and large true with computer OSes, too. Take a dip into the OS X fora to see how people feel since 10.6, which was six years ago. I can also say that with only two exceptions in the longish history of Windows, only two updates have made my machines run faster than the prior version, and one of those goes back almost 25 years.
