iPod Old Ipod not connecting to alpine head unit

I bought an Alpine head unit with the ipod connector and it works great w/ my 2 gig nano, but that doest hold enough music. So i got out my old 3G 15 gig ipod, fired up my pc that hasnt been used in probably a year and up dated it (to 3.2 i think). If i plug it into the head unit it will charge but the head unit just says searching and wont bring up "alpine" across the screen like it does on all the new I pods. Is the 3G just to old to use with it or is there a way of getting it to work?
