iPod Old Ipod with new greener mac book

Hi,

I just purchased the new "greener" macbook... I am trying to copy the contents of my old 2005 mac book over to the new including (my itunes library, pictures, documents etc) The thing is I would like to keep all of the above on the old computer too.

I have previously used my old 4gb Ipod to transfer the contents of my previous computer when it died and was replaced ( I am not sure what model the I pod is- but its OLD. It is from the era when I pods looked like bricks it has the spin wheel and 4 circular buttons below it)

The problem here is that my normal dock will not connect to my new computer- the port is totally different.
is there some sort of adapter I can buy?

I read something about migration assistant.. well my old macbook doesn't have it!

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Ok, we just need to clear up a few things first. If you bought your 'Macbook' in 2005, it cannot be a 'Macbook' because they didn't exist yet. That must mean your laptop is probably an iBook. It should say that under the screen right? I don't know for sure, but I think Migration assisstant wasn't installed on those, but I'm not sure if it's a software situation. If it is, do you know what version of Mac OSX you are using? You can find this if you click on the Apple button in the menu bar and click on 'About this Mac', the version number should be 10.x.x. What are the x's on your laptop?

To transfer your stuff over, you would probably be best off buying an external hard drive which connects via USB (the reason your iPod doesn't work is because it connects using a firewire port, which is no longer included on the new Macbooks.) With the external hard drive, just copy to it all the files you want to move onto the new laptop, then use migration assisstant on the new laptop to import them.

I hope the first bit isn't too baffling, but the hard drive is the best way forward I think.

Are you trying to plug a firewire cable into a usb port?
