The iPod: 1GB gen 2 Shuffle that I've hardly used and want to give to a friend. The Mac: 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo MBP (Nov. '07) - iTunes 8.0.2

The problem: I plugged the Shuffle into my MBP to show my friend how to make playlists, use Autofill, etc. The connection was extremely sketchy - it kept spontaneously disappearing from the sources list, then when I'd re-plug, it'd give me the device removal warning. Finally I noticed - duh - that updated iPod SW was available, which I installed successfully and assumed the matter was resolved... until, 5 seconds later, it magically ejected itself again. I've tried different USB ports. Now it won't show up at all, with any amount of un/re-plugging, but the charging light is still flashing.

So what gives? Should I just let her take it home and try it on her machine (year-old Intel mini)? Or is t an iPod issue? All ideas appreciated.

If you reset the SMC/PRAM on your computer and everything else connected to the ports seem to be fine I'd be leaning more towards the cable or the iPod. Testing with a known good port on your friend's computer or with another cable if you have one will tell you definitively.
