Old mac mini as music server

Hello- Im new on this forum so please bear with me if this has been talked to death. i have an old, mid 2007 Mac Mini, with 1.83 dual core processor and 2gig of ram. id like to turn it into a music server. I'm not looking for any video, just high definition audio. Is this machine useable for this purpose? If so, what software are most people using? I've seen Bit Perfect, J river, and others. if too old, would the mid tier current mini be good for this purpose? Thanks

I can't answer your question based on experience, but since you haven't yet received any replies, it might be because few people are using a Mac mini that old as a music server. My wife used to have your model, if I remember correctly. When it became too slow to handle her large photo library, we gave it to my dad, who used it for web surfing and word processing. Last year, it became too slow for him, so he bought a new base-model Mac mini. So my guess is that it would be too slow for your purposes, but that could depend on what version of OS X and what software you'd be using, and how large your music collection is. Since you already have the computer, why not give it a try and see if it works for you? For my media server, which includes a fairly large iTunes library, I use a late 2012 i7 2.3 GHz Mac mini with 16 GB of RAM, and it works great. I also use it for photo editing and various other medium-level tasks, and it's fine.
