OLD Mac Mini SSD update

I was about to order this 60gb SSD to upgrade an old Mac mini I have. It is a late 2006 core Duo:http://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac_mini_cd_1.83-specs.html

Will this drop in just fine to the Mac Mini?

Yes, will work fine. However the speed of the SSD is going to be severely crippled by the SATA interface (it's only 1.5GB/s).

Basically, you're not going to see the results that you should get with the SSD. It'll breathe some life into it, no doubt about it, but as you can't upgrade past Snow Leopard anyway (not really futureproof) I'd personally recommend saving up the extra to buy a newer Mac Mini.

That drive will drop in fine.

You will only get SATA 1 speed (1.5Gb/s) because the Mac Mini SATA chipset only supports SATA 1. But the drive will fit and should work.

And even with the 1.5GB/s SATA limitation, it still should be a lot better than the pokey 60GB drive that came in the mac mini.

The long in the tooth Vertex2 I have only managed around 100Mb/s read/write on the SATA 1.5Gb interface I had via a PCI card on my G4. The seriously fast random access speeds made it fly for booting and loading apps etc... You'll still get a boost from using an SSD. It just won't be the 500Mb/s speeds modern SSDs and systems can achieve.

Just did this on a 2006 core solo. Total blast.

The CPU install is easy, once you've gone to the trouble to take out the HD. And a T7600 is only 50 bucks on eBay.

1.5 isn't much compared to 6.0, but still several orders of magnitude faster than anything else you can hook up, internal or external. My 06 is now faster than a 2.4 iMac running an external SSD (FW800).

And with a quick patch (with the C2D processor), you can run 10.7. You just add the machine name to a certain file before booting (install the OS on the SSD, connected to a newer mac).

I picked up an intel 320 80gb SSD, also 50 bucks. If your going to spend 100+, you might as well get crucial or samsung.
