Old Mac pro or new MacBook Pro?

Recommendations appreciated. My company has told me I can upgrade my system, I'm a mac user, video editor (I currently use the older Mac Pro tower mid 2012, 64GB). I know the latest Mac Pro (trashcan version) is in need of an update and now I don't know what direction to go. Shall I just go for the fully loaded new MacBook pro and hope they release another MacPro within the next year or so (and then get that too), or just go all out and buy the fully loaded "trashcan" now? Their budget is $13,500.. plenty. But I've got to make a decision before the end of the year (or loose my budget).

Is there an issue with your current setup or is it simply time to spend the money? also, without laying out the details of your workflow, sources, tools, setup, storage, unmet needs, wishlist... there is no way for anyone to understand what would serve that situation best.

Its not a money issues so: If you want of need portability, get the Macbook Pro. Otherwise a 8 core trashcan with dual D700s may be more suitable for desktop work where you may have several monitors and drive arrays, and do a lot of transcoding.

I have both, the trash can is about 15% faster in typical grunt work. The biggest personal issue with the Macbook is that it gets hot when heavy lifting (like transcoding) and the fans run at high speed... there is a bit of anxiety about beating on it, and the toasty fingers. No heat issue with editing.

Your other choice for the desktop may be the iMac.
