My MacBook Pro 15” Late 2013 is not charging or drawing any power. I disconnected the battery to see if I could use just the mains power, not sure if this was the right thing to try, but it didn’t draw any power, does this mean its the charger?

I was planning on getting a new MacBook Pro on the next release, but I might now have to get one sooner. I would like some help with my options though.

One option I have is to temporarily use a family members Air, make a new user and download from iCloud my documents/desktop. My question with this option is - Can I only download to the Air what I need, so for example not my whole photo library as its big, then when I get my own machine download everything including my photo library, or will there be a strange mix up on what is the latest.

Also as there is no power going to my old MacBook Pro, I need a way to get things like my music library and anything else that isn’t on iCloud Drive. - My music library might be on an old Time Machine backup, if its not though, can I take the SSD out and use a SATA reader (m.2 I think…) plugged into the USB on my new machine and then get what I need that way? For the iTunes library can I restore this easily this way?

The only other option is to pay for a new battery, this seems tricky to install and paying at a store just might cost too much as the MacBook does struggle with some things so cant see me using it for much longer.

Thanks for reading all of this

Keep in mind that the MacBook SSD 2013 2014 2015 2016 have a different connector (12 + 16-pole).#

You need an Endlosere for it or an Adapter, theese are rare......

When you have extracted the SSD ( Look for iFixIt Manual ) and conected to the New Mac you can simply Import all Data with the Migration Assistant to the new Mac.

Some MacBook Pros won't power on without the battery, though I can't remember exactly when this started (older laptops with user removable batteries usually worked just fine without it).

Usually only one cell of a battery is failing and you see a quick discharge from 20% to zero, but you can still load some of the battery capacity. So first I would check if it isn't a problem with the charger or charging cable. Test your charger with another MacBook or borrow their charger to test it on yours.

You have just learned why one keeps a physical backup drive close by.

I believe Other World Computing may sell a custom-design USB enclosure that will accept your internal (proprietary) Apple blade SSD, but be aware that it's on the pricey side ($75-100).

But if there's no other way...

Other thoughts...
We don't know where in the world you are, but right now amazon has a sale on the current lineup of MacBook Pro 14" and 16" models in the USA.
$400 off -- you won't see a better deal for years.

And just today MacRumors front page had an article that documents a leak in the speed of the new M2 CPUs, that shows them to be essentially "an incremental speed boost" above the current models. That makes the discount even more attractive.

I'm thinking that if you made an appt. with an Apple Store genius bar, you might be able to bring in the new one along with the old one, and get your data "migrated over" for free. (even if you bought from amazon...)

Yeah this is true and I used back up all the time, when I had an iMac and Time Machine I would do the hourly backups. Since iCloud I didn’t feel the need so much as my photos and documents are all there. Im pretty sure that my music library has the latest backed up, so if this is an easy transfer from Time Machine then that would be great, or would it not accept the older OS backups?

Im looking at the refurb pros at the moment on Apple, pretty good price I think.
