Are you happy with the way new Mac's desktop setups are? I mean... It's like nobody care about the Desktop experience no more.
I miss my Mac OS 7.5 Desktop Experience. I remember how trilled I was when the new Mac OS 8.5 show up and how hooked I was with Mac OS 9... Not Mac OS Classic I'm talking about Mac OS 9.2.2 The last stand of an Era. The OS who crash everytime you try to start Explorer! I never thought about this feeling but when I installed my new 2012 Mac in my house I spend just a couple of seconds to feel right at home.

1) Open Terminal and Put all of those new GUI experience to Crapland and revert everything how I like it.
2) bought a copy of Pathfinder
3) Relax

today people just want to have a plain desktop picture with the default Dock at the bottom. WHY???

Because it works so well. Making the dock so tiny like that defeats the ease of use.

Sorry but no, and I've had Macs since Mac SE. While there are certainly some sense of nostalgia when using my old G4 cube running OS9, I think OSX is superior in many ways, particularly the UI

As long as you like your desktop that's all that matters. To me, your dekstop is neither cool, nor un-cool. It's just another look for someone.

I'm happy with my OS X desktop, and that's all that matters to me.

I have my dock hidden and only use it to force quit applications.

In fact, I could probably find a way to avoid even needing that.

Everyone has different needs. Mine are not mainstream, and yours probably aren't either (realistically MOST people on this site are probably not the target audience of any computer/OS manufacturing company).

The Old school OS's were neat, like OS 7.5, 8 and 9.

But they were one of the reasons Apple started to fail, You had System 7, OS 8 and 9, which were all very mediocre. Then you have Microsoft comming out with super slick ( for the time, ) Windows NT, Windows 95/98/ME ( vomit ).

It wasn't until OSX that Apple got back in the OS game.

What was neat about them really ? They were archaic before they even shipped. It's like Apple forgot to bring the Mac into the 90s. And no, I didn't think Microsoft's Windows 95, 98 or ME were any better. It's like Microsoft didn't want to break DOS compatibility and since NTVDM wasn't up to snuff, didn't dare use Windows NT 3.1 and on as consumer driven OSes.

They are neat looking back, probably becuase I used them growing up. I didn't say they were a good OS.

Windows 9X was probably not any better than the Mac OS's of the time, but my personal expereince was that the Windows versions of the time were much better than the Mac OS's of the time, then again, I never used Windows 98 much, I used lots of Windows 95, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. ( I had ME on a dumpster computer I bought halfway through college, ew )

Especially Apple computers.

Gawd, they were so underpowered once they got more than a year old.

OS X is a true blessing, I'm not longing for the 7.x/8.x/9.x days.

If you really wanted old school, you would get rid of the Dock and bring back the control strip with one-touch volume, networking, display resolution, etc. options.

Just the fact they had pre-emptive multi-tasking made them a wee bit better. Both OSes were atrocious from a OS design standpoint, relegating consumers to some 2nd class of computing citizenship, while enterprises got to play around with then 30 years old UNIX systems or then new Windows NT.

Nothing neat about the 90s and consumer OSes, you're just remembering it through nostalgia tainted glasses. I'm just happy I discovered Linux at some point. It's kinda sad that an OS built from a school project by some young university punk trumped the biggest consumer options out there in terms of modern day OS features.

you got everything wrong. Mac OS 7,8 and 9 weren't bad. Steve Wozniak in his book iWoz pointed out he fixed all this bugs with his son help. Copland was a joke and Woz wanted to help before Apple buy that crap.

It was great working with extentions and fun working with scripts and scrapbook app. Don get me wrong I love Mac OS X and for me itś the best OS today. The way I set it up is an easy way to be connected to the past while working in the future.

Dock is small but it has zooming activated.

Sorry, in the 90s, single user OSes with cooperative multi-tasking, lack of full filesystem ACL support and proper authentication and security hardening, not to mention complete lack of built-in network monitoring and troubleshooting tools were plain bad.

Nostalgia might tell you otherwise, but frankly, by the time Apple was on OS 8 and OS 9, the system had overstayed its welcome.

You could always fool around with /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/HIToolbox.framework/Versions/A/Resources so that you can change everything to Platinum . I hate the whole thing with third-party extensions on MacOS 9 and the lack of a command-line, but other than that I thought it was great.
