I want to use my current SIM because I have a better price on voice and unlimited data. I'd like to be able to update my iTunes to 7.4.1. That said, is it possible to "jailbreak"my phone to use the old SIM and also use Installer.app to install things such as NES?

I'm getting confused with all the iTunes updates, new jailbreaking apps, etc. I've researched on hacktheiphone.com but can't seem to get an up-to-date idea of whether or not its possible. Thanks!

The short answer is "No"... the long answer is "Yes" ;-)

You're talking about 2 different things... jailbreaking does not allow you to use other SIMs in your iPhone. That is "unlocking". So, what you really want is to unlock your iPhone from the AT&T SIM so you can use your SIM from another company.

So far, IMHO, there are no good real unlock options for the iPhone... although there are reported to be a few working. Most likely you're after a software unlock which is supposedly what iphonesimfree.com is promising, but even if it works and they start shipping, you'll have to find a distributor to handle it for you... and in all likely hood this method will be defeated in a future update by Apple.

Probably the best unlocking option is the TurboSIM option, which is like a replacement SIM that uses your other one and emulates an AT&T one... but those are not readily available either as, when this was announced a couple thousand iPhone users ordered up all the stock.

Hope this is helpful.

I think he is referring to the following tut: http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_using_cingular_sim.html in which you can use your current att sim with your Iphone. While it doesn't unlock it, it does allow you to use other att/cingular sim cards.

I liked it because it allowed me to get the phone without their new contract (or be prepaid). I wouldn't mind being able to use 7.4 either. If someone knows that would be awesome.

Correct, I currently have a SIM card through AT&T (cingular) that provides me with enough minutes and unlimited data for less than the Apple/AT&T price plans. After reading through hacktheiphone.com, it seems that even using iTunes 7.4.1 shouldn't be a problem in doing what I would like.

Thanks Fookin. That was the plan, but now I'm holding out to see if it will be even easier using the new unlocking tool (once it's a GUI) that the dev team just put out this week. Thanks again.
