Old smartphones

I was kind of curios to see what old smartphones or just old phones in general that you guys still have laying around the house. Maybe it's broken, using it as a mp3 player? What do you plan on doing with it?

I have 2 HTC inspire 4Gs (one was mine and my mom gave me her old one, both still working), HTC One X (water damaged and doesn't charge), an old HTC tilt with that good ol qwerty, old Mytouch Fender that won't even power on. an iPhone 4 which is still working and my son is using as an MP3 player and some old dumb phone that I can't even remember the make or name.

I dunno, for some reason I have a hard time getting rid of all my oldies eventhough I have no use for them. Sentimental maybe? ::shrugs::

I buy and sell electronics on the side so I always have new and killer phones but I use older phones for myself since I am so rough on them. I currently use a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, more than good enough specs for me.

No old smartphones; just an old motorola rocker and razor v3 laying around somewhere... Oh and a samsung flip phone for cingular, oh how the days have gone. The only old smartphones I would keep are iPhones 4 and up (for now) just to keep as backups in case something happens to my main iPhone. But the resale value makes it hard for me to actually keep my phone when I can still get so much out of it! Gotta love that resale value

Has anyone ever used those disposable smartphone kiosks in the mall to sell your old phones? If so, is the monetary value worth anything or not really?

No unused smartphones, tablets, or laptops. I've been good at selling them on as soon as I no longer have a use for them.

I do however still have the device that introduced me to Apple products, a 2005 iPod, even though I haven't touched it in years. I have illogical attachment to that.

I have 3 Original iPhones in the house and a Cyan blue Nokia N9 just for kicks. Always loved the MeeGo OS.

A few devices have been handed down to my kids--a Note II with a broken sim tray that my youngest uses as a tablet and a 4S my 10 yr old daughter uses as an iPod and serves as a 'wifi' phone allowing her to FaceTime and iMessage at home (previously a backup device for either me or my wife). I also have an old 3GS that is plugged into my car's composite connection and loaded with movies for playback on the in car RES. Otherwise, I generally sell anything as soon as it's been replaced.

I've got a Samsung Intercept somewhere in the closest. Ex GFs old phone. Android 2.2. Had questionable specs in 2010. Now it's just unsueable for much of anything. I suppose it could make a good alarm or something but flipping through homescreens is enough of a chore. You can forget about running any sort of apps on it. Second oldest phone I had was a Droid X but I sold that.

In my sig are all mine, plus I have even older 'semi-smart' phones like the Razr V3 and Nokia phones that I can't even remember their model names.

I generally sell my older smartphones or give it away but I still have my Nexus One. That might be my all-time fav phone when it is all said and done.

The Nexus One actually takes better low light photos than my HTC One. I think the HTC One is the most beautiful smartphone I ever owned but has one of the WORST camera ever on a modern smartphone. Purple haze. Blurry. No matter what settings or filters, the photos look terrible. And HTC never fixed through a software update. Only in broad daylight can it take a decent photo. And by decent I mean it can be more flukey than capability. Anything else the camera is completely useless. Luckily, camera isn't high on my priority and the HTC One checkmarks in all other areas very well including performance. No hang or freeze ups so far after nearly a year.

I have to keep the Nexus One because of its better camera in low light and basically a collector's item and first true Google phone. It also has a removable battery better for the longer term. And I can store more videos on the 32 GB card because they are all non-HD at 360p resolution or less. It has its quirks like the touchscreen and the GPU is ancient, but it is a great little phone. Best ergonomics and perfect size for one-handed use in my eyes. And may go down as my fav ever even though it has hangups, occasion glitches, laggy animations, and slow for browsing (WiFi g) for today's standard. I came to accept its flaws.

I have an old Samsung clam shell for emergencies - not sure it qualifies as a smart phone. I treat my iPhones meticulously well (battery case, screen protector, regular cleaning etc.) and them give them to my kids ... who, even though they are now young adults, immediately set about destroying them.

I have an iPhone 4S, Treo 750, and a HTC TyTn 2 laying around. The HTC is in mint condition with box and and everything included. The Treo and HTC is not really worth anything to sell. I just kept the 4S as a backup and to see major updates in iOS.

I barely use my iPad 2 anymore. It's mostly used as an alarm clock and does that very well. Sometimes I'll play a game on it. My N7(2013) is my main tablet.

I actually think it is good to keep older devices around. If HTC or Google can bring back the Nexus One design but with better guts and KitKat, I would buy one in heartbeat. I loved that form factor.

I would've have kept my older iPhones because of their better hardware but I can't stand iOS right now. When my iPhone 4 was still on iOS4, everything was generally lag-free and smooth. After 4.3 and 5.0, Apple added more bloat like Newsstand. And certain apps needed iOS5 requirements to download them or would close. So when I updated to iOS6 because a restore was needed for a sim-unlock, my iPhone 4 and the updates from my prev apps started to lag as well.

With Nexus One (2010) on Gingerbread (2.3.6), I generally can get MOST apps found on the HTC One (2013). And I can always go back to a prev version of an app if I don't like the current update. I have a Holo Launcher that can do swipe gestures to turn off the screen with the Screen Off & Lock app animation. I have TubeMate that can download most videos from any site. I can wake up the screen using No Lock which stopped working unrooted after ICS.

Restrictive OS, mandatory updating for apps or firmware, non-removable battery, and internal storage only tends to be short-sighted. The older Android/Symbian phones tended to be better for the longer term esp with removable battery and micro-SD slot.

I think I still have some windows mobile phones sitting around, the original "smartphone" IMO. I also have an ipaq with a 1xrt CF card modem that I used to use as a smartphone, ahh the good old days.

I keep my old iP4s for backup, travel use, and the Sleep Cycle app.

I also still have my 3G which was kept as backup for the 4s, and for mp3 player use. I'm kind of in love with it since it was my first smartphone, and I still love the way it feels in the hand It still works perfectly btw.

I couldn't justify selling the 520 when it was going to cost $10 to even ship it most likely and only sell for less than $40. My Huawei sold for that price, and I was like never again.

The iPhone 4 also is partially broken, and so is the S2. The others will sell for the same price ranges the 520 would sell now too.

Maybe one day I'll finally dump them, but that is not today. .

I'm giving away the Thrive, Galaxy S 4G and Nexus S to relatives overseas. The others, the family uses when we travel abroad since buying a local prepaid SIM is a lot cheaper than roaming charges. One nice thing about Android phones is they don't tend to attract thieves as much as the iPhone does.

I love the form factor of the iPhone 4's and I use those like an iPod Touch so I don't think I'll be getting rid of them in the near future.

Find it amusing that your Samsung Galaxy S had 4G yet here in the UK, the first Galaxy we had sold to us that was 4G was the Galaxy S4.

That's just the model name. It's actually HSPA+ (T-Mobile) but that's already considered 4G in the USA.
