Old User ID not working

I recently bought a new iPhone 6s. I decided I would log into my old apple ID (which is not an email) so I could download my purchases onto this new device. However I keep getting told my password is wrong, which it is not, and when I try to change the password by going through iForgot I cannot as it tells me "this is not an apple ID" because it is not an email. Can someone help me end this torture?
