Old video / audio conversion software

Quite a number of years ago I had difficulty getting some YouTube content to play, and installed two utilities to get them to work. They have been migrated over to many of my machines since I installed them and they are to be found on my machines running Big Sur and now Monterey. They are:

At this point I think these are no longer needed, and should be removed. It appears that both are no longer supported and have been that way for years. I would like to get rid of them if they are serving no purpose.

So, are they completely unnecessary at this point?

I remember those apps / extensions were a great help “back in the day“ for playing windows media files, AVI files and MKV files on older macOS

I am not sure they work on newer versions of macOS ?

I use VLC for any media that does not play natively on Mac

I had to smile. I recall using those apps years ago. I switched (at home) to Mac when we put Vista on the bench at work to see if we wanted to upgrade to it or wait. That was the red flag I needed and since the, always Mac at home (and Win and Linux virtuals). I have an out-of-commission 2012 Mini and it may very well have one or both of those apps within.
 
Yup, useful tools in their day. I removed Flip4Mac a while ago. I removed Perian too, per this advice,

but still haven't managed to get the icon out of the preferences pane (not that I tried hard).

And you did not have any problem playing video or audio content after deleting them? I would be surprised at this point if MacOS did not natively have the needed capability, but I won't know for sure until I get rid of those two and try to run some content.

Please let us know how your content test on OS native works. Btw, big fan of Blue and Gold Macaws.
 
Perian was a must when I started using a Mac.
It’s no longer needed not because Apple decided to be nice, but because there are excellent apps, like IINA https://iina.io, that can play everything.
 
OK, it's been a while and I have not had any problem running YouTube audio or video without these old programs. So it looks like they're really no longer needed. Good to clear out at least some of the dead wood.
