Older iMac question.

Ok, so I have an older imac g3 that died, would not turn on at all.

I found a replacement imac g3, a little upgraded.

I moved the dvd and hard drive to the new one that boots up and now it's booting to a flashing question mark.

I tried a bootable dvd and when I hold down option it will not show the hard drive or the dvd as somethign to boot from.

The software cd says it's for a Imac dv models, is that possibly why it's not showing up properly when I hold down option?

If you are trying to Franken-Mac a G3 iMac with hardware it didn't ship with and software that shipped with something else, I do wish you luck! The official Mac specs on non-DVD iMacs don't even agree on basic things like ram installs.

I would guess that the HD was what died in the old one. the flashing question mark means that there is no system folder that it can find.

Ok so here is an update.

I used a different mac os cd and when I held down option it actually worked.

Also when I continued with mac os x install it did see the hard drive fine.

So the dvd drive and hard drive are phyically functioning on the newer 500 mhz g3 machine, but apparently it will not boot off of the hd so I'm not sure if there is any data on there, or if it doesn't regognize the os that was installed on it.
