I am fuzzy on this after reading a fair amount on the forums here... I have an iPad Pro 12.9 I bought when the 1Phone X came out, making this one about 2 and a half years old I guess. It's one with a home button still, It is Cellular/Wifi, the whole thing, one step down from the highest capacity - I think it's a 256 gb version... Nice Tablet with no issues. Even have the Pencil from the same year. All of it working well. Cover and all.

I also have a MacBook Pro Retina,, 2015 mid year model... The Mac Book is suffering to keep up with simple low level Web use, as simple as facebook, or even doing Home searches on Zillow when maps are required... Fans kick in at what I would call light use for most people, and my Bluetooth Mouse I have for use with the MBP is great as long as you don't use Safari as your browser. My iPad Pro doesn't have the issues with the browser, and doesn't have fans kicking on all the time... I suppose because there are no fans... but never seems to get hot or cranky at me when I use it for any purpose... even the times when drawing and using heavy graphics on it.

So my question (from the title of the post) is, can I use the older iPad Pro as a second monitor on the newer iPad Pros? I plan on buying one as a replacement for my MBPR at the release of the next model if they can, but want some assurance of the compatible usage. I want basically a second monitor, I don't think Apple has *extended* desktops on the iPad, but having the ability to use two separate monitors to allow me the luxury of multi-tasking on the separate desktops would be a great advantage to me. I am loving the Bluetooth mouse features on the older iPad Pro as well... If I buy the newer model, I will also buy the Magic Keyboard for it and the pencil... I guess my next concern will be... If it is possible to use the older iPad Pro as a second monitor, what kind of adapters/cables will be required?

Any help would be nice. Unlike most of the inquiries on this, I have a no cost restriction, but like the portability of iPad versus the MBPR, and would like to change my set up to iPad if possible, having the ability to expand it when at home, or even take both on Vacation for me and the wife to have personal carry units, at about the same weight of the MBPR. (we have tablets all over, but most are android Amazon HD unit since we buy them for the Grand Kids to use while visiting and to use for control panels for home automation)

That sounds a lot like a hardware defect. Contact Apple support and see what they think. It could be a GPU-related issue.

Even with iPad Pro 2018 using iPad Pro as external monitor is not really an option (only mirror and no other settings). I doubt your older iPad Pro can do very much.

Duet can achieve a bit more but requires a subscription for full features. Go and check that one out.
