Older Upgraded Macs and Airdrop

I have an early 2011 13 inch macbook pro.

I recently replaced Bluetooth so I can make my Handoff work. Basically I made all things new (RAM, SSD and BT4, etc) so my hardware is up to par with software features of Yosemite.

But my Airdrop has stopped working. When I open Airdrop, I only see a sentence telling me to ask the other person to open their Airdrop folder. I don't see what I am looking for in terms of making my Mac discoverable, for Macs.

This doesn't work whether I have bluetooth on or off, so not working with iOS devices either.

What you are seeing is correct for early 2011 MBPs in terms of Airdrop so either the card is not being correctly recognised as BT4 or there is some other constraint inhibiting the later Airdrop behaviour.

Problem solved

So I think the reason why it didn't work any more was that I didn't re-use the Continuity Activation tool after upgrading to 10.10.1. That's why Airdrop stopped working between Macs, as well as Handoff.

For other readers, if you use macbook pro 13 inch early 2011 with BT4 that you manually added by opening hardware, and your Airdrop stops working, chances are your Continuity feature also has stopped working.
