I’m using my M4 iPad Pro with a Studio Display. As many of you will know, you can’t turn off the iPad display when it’s connected to an external monitor (turning off the iPad‘s screen also turns off the external display).

According to Apple’ support document on the new ultra retina XDR display, they suggest that users “Set your iPad Pro to turn off the display when you aren’t using it. The shorter the time, the better for your display. To adjust this setting, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto Lock.” (https://support.apple.com/en-ca/119963#:~:text=With extended long-term use, image appears on the screen.)

However this is not possible when using an external monitor. I wondered what everybody’s thoughts were about this? I thought about downloading a pure black image and using it on my iPad when it’s connected to an external monitor, as a possible workaround.

Hopefully with the next iteration of iPadOS, we will have the ability to turn off the iPad display when connected to an external monitor.

I really can’t understand why you don’t have the option to totally switch off the iPad screen when plugged to an external display like clamshell mode on macbooks. I mean this sounds like such an obvious feature to have.

Yes, and will be especially important moving forward with these new OLED screens 👍🏼

In the Shortcuts app you can create automations that set the brightness to zero when a display is connected or Stage Manager is turned on, and back upon disconnect. I haven’t tried this, but FYI.

I would have defaulted to this if it was an option, but because it wasn’t, I have found the utility of using the iPad as a dashboard when connecting it to an external display. If I’m not doing that, I turn the brightness all the way down (easy with keyboards that have brightness controls). Since Apple does pixel shifting to prevent burn-in, and OLED burn-in is related to high brightness, I think you’d have to go for months 24/7 with the screen on with the same image for this scenario to ever cause any measurable effect, let alone become an issue in real life.

Wow, I can't believe Apple didn't think of this. It seems like a no-brainer to be able to turn off the screen to minimize the chance of burn-in.

Apple has developed algorithms to monitor each indivudal pixels to make sure burn-in risk is minimized.

Are you able to simply lower the brightness of the iPad when you have it connected to your external monitor? Just lower the brightness to 25% or all the way down, and the screen won’t burn in.

Is there a faster way than to do it from the iPad?

Hi. Found this topic searching the web. I have an M4 iPad Pro 13’ and using alienware 27” flat display AW2721D from 2021. I am also using a Kinivo HDMI splitter, and a vava USB-C hub. My brightness is set to 50% and my contrast set to 75%.

My ipad stage manager screen dock burned into my display. I see my dock on my iPad burned in and flickering on the display. I‘ve unplugged my screen and my HDMI splitter and it did not resolve.

I’ve also tested my Mac mini plugged directly into the display to see if it was burned into the HDMI splitter (not sure if that’s a thing), and it is definitely burned into my screen.

I dont have a lot of specifics around how it happened, safe to say that I probably worked on my iPad with the display once for the day, and probably left it plugged in and had my screen lock turned to off because I was downloading media to take on my trip. I’ve just returned and today is the first day I’m in my home office, turned the screen on and it was there.

Less than pissed because it gives me a chance to get rid of these monitors, which I don't like. But the threat is real.

Any thoughts on this or how I can avoid this in the future? I think I read that I should have my iPad to lock after a couple minutes somewhere in these posts, which I do 99% of the time, except for when I’m downloading media. Can someone confirm? Thanks for any info.

Edit: I am also, fairly POSITIVE, that I had my ipad screen turned to the most minimum brightness level, cause it’s what I do normally, but can’t confirm. I also believe I turned off the setting to lock my iPad when its closed, cause its what I normally do.

can you post a picture? How long did the iPad screen remained on, regardless of the brightness (which you are not certain about)?

Video attached, as it doesn’t show well on a picture. You can see my Apple TV screen with my iPad dock burned in.

Edit - How long it was on could have been 4-16 hrs. Sorry I dont have more memory on that.

The monitor has burn in. The video shows the monitor with the ipad dock burned in.
Oh, OK, so the iPad is fine. Burn-in rates are dependent on the screen and its software, not the device driving it, so what happened to your external display isn’t necessarily applicable to the discussion of burn-in on the iPad, with very different screen technology and anti-burn-in software.

Well sorry everyone. Anywhere else you could send me? It does seem strange this happened as I’ve used different iPad pros like this with the same monitor.

Well that make sense, tandem oled should be way more resistent to burn in. I am pretty confident it could be left at min brightness indefintely and never have burn in... and would probably withstand weeks or even months of half brightness screen always on with no issues, but I can't see a realistic scenario where this could happen anyway...

It shouldn’t worry you - just put both screens to sleep while you’re not using them.
