After several months of spec’ speculation, OM Systems (Olympus) announced the OM-1 today. Overall, I like a lot about what they did. While still at 20MP, it’s a new stacked sensor with significant CAF/tracking improvements, and more DR. Great battery life, top-notch WR, very similar to the very comfortable EM-1iii. Panasonic is also about to launch a new flagship M43 body in the GH6 later this month, so it’s an exciting time for we enthusiastic M43 shooters. :)

I’m not sure if I’ll spring for either body in the near term, but I’m quite tempted to jump all over the 40-150 F4. It’s pretty much exactly what I’ve been wanting for some time now. I have the 12-45 F4, and it’s a fantastic lens under the same concept of light, compact, good MFD, sharp, and top notch weather-sealing. Be still, my wallet!

It’s a very impressive set of specifications, with a big jump in video for OM systems. Looks like the LUMIX GH6 will use the same sensor.

what a quandary? Do I upgrade from my EM-1 mk1? Or keep the existing m43 kit and add a Nikon Z6ii?

The 40-150F4 is interesting. A good option if you are looking for something in that range.

I was fortunate to get my 40-150F2.8 plus 1.4 tc for about 25% off in an Amazon sale. It may be bigger and heavier, but not worth changing for me.

I had that lens with, but with the MC20, and it is an awesome lens for sure. It’s just a bit bulky, so I didn’t hang on to it. The F4 has the same 70cm MFD, but comes in at half the weight. At 150mm and close focus, it should offer some nice separation.

If I was in the market today then i would probably swing to the f4

A wildlife reviewer with some sample shots. The reviewer was pretty happy with the improved CAF and tracking, and it sounds like there’s a lot more confidence in higher ISOs. Handheld HighRes and Live-ND also improved and discussed. While I wouldn’t buy one today, if there was an upgrade program, I’d seriously consider it. Even not buying one now, I can at least see this camera as a viable upgrade path down the road.

Well, Olympus does make some "small package" outstanding lenses that are smooth, quiet, and sharp. The camera is a great addition, and much improved.

I’ve been watching a few more reviews on the OM-1, and it’s the first time I’ve been tempted to go for broke and preorder a $2200 body. One reviewer that shoots many brands/makes basically summed it up as a fun camera that just delivers on whatever you want to do (and he ended the review by dumping a glass of water on it).

Part of the appeal of Olympus for me is that it does feel like a fun camera, like a dog with a leash in its mouth always ready to go. I’m glad that OM Systems kept the fun, while fixing the CAF and adding a big EVF. Decisions decisions.

Panasonic have now announced the GH6. It's a much more video centric camera. Even with the higher res sensor, for stills I'm more inclined towards the OM-1

I agree. While the GH6 goes up to 25MP, and even has a 100MP HHHR mode, it’s just too chonky for me. The G9 is just barely acceptable in terms of size and weight (for M43), and the GH6 adds about half a pound. It also sounds like Panasonic has a firmware update coming already, which in their case usually makes the camera even better. I’d still easily choose the OM-1 over the GH6. Now if they could take that sensor and make a G9 successor, that would be more like it. I’d have to think it’s going to happen, but it might be a while.

Pretty disappointed at the GH6 . I was hoping for something much less video centric , though I , too , share the hope of a G9 successor with the GH6 sensor . As things stand now , I'll take the OM-1 over the GH6 . But I'm pretty pleased with what I've got (G9) so I can wait .

The OM-1 is finding its way into the hands of everyday folks now as preorders get filled. Sounds like the camera is selling pretty well, where people who preordered early are still waiting. I’ve seen a couple places now compare the BIF AF to the A1, and say the OM-1 is even at times besting it, like in near-field AF tracking. If BIF is your thing, the OM-1 is worth a really hard look. Even the high-ISO performance is really good, especially so for M43. This guy’s review is pretty good. He’s shot many systems and sells his work, and he seems pretty excited. The ”Last Olympus” or “First OM” body looks like a winner.

Haha, yeah, it’s a sickness. I’m still evaluating the Fuji, though, and I don’t know if I will get rid of either one. I’m finally getting the hang of the Fuji film sims as I wait for the ground to thaw again.

For as great as the OM-1 is, I have determined that it is more camera than I need, at least right now. AF tracking is meaningless when you can’t keep the bird in the frame! The better ISO performance is appealing, though. I still have a goal of keeping things light, and M43 and Fuji can both offer some of that, but in different ways.
