How often does iOS 5 search for updates? Is it hourly, daily or weekly?

Or, it only updates if you go to the Updates menu in the Settings app?

I believe it only searches for over-the-air updates when you go to it in settings.

i think its best not to automatically search for updates as this would drain battery uselessly... mine did not report any update, needed to use the settings to update to ios 5.0.1

They are pushed. If you have not received your notice you will eventually. They are pushing out millions of notices.
