on the verge of making the switch but just wondering about appleworks

I'm getting very close to getting myself an imac, and just wanted to clear a few things up. The current concern being appleworks.

For starters I'm mainly interested in the word processor and how it rates. Also, and perhaps more importantly, is it compatible with Micrsoft Word? Or do I have to buy mac office for that privilege?

Also, any good for creating CV's?

And the bottom line. Is it any good or do I really need to buy mac office?

Ugh.. I hate to dis Apple (especially in favor of Microsoft) but I've had serious issues with AppleWorks' word processor. It hasn't been compatible with other word processors, even though I save the documents in the correct format; I don't like the layout or interface; and it doesn't have the features I like in Word. A lot of this is due to the fact that I am just used to Word, but I really think that this is the one time that MS has provided the better product than Apple.

Other than that, AppleWorks is great, especially for the drawing application. If Apple can bring all the aspects of AW up to Keynote standards, then they'll be in great shape, but for now.....

for writing letters and CVs it's fine. for my needs (complex forms with nested tables produced in Word) it's not. and the interface takes a bit of getting used to.
is there any way you could try loading a couple of word documents into AW in a shop or at a friends?
