On Transfering files between an iMac and a MacBook Pro.

If I would like to transfer files between an iMac and a MacBook Pro:

Anything better?

How would the transfer work? Just plug the firewire 800 cable to both ends, and then what? would Finder identify the iMac and MacBook Pro? And then just drag and drop or so?

Can you please point me to a good Firewire cable (from Amazon) please, does it have to be Firewire "800"?

If both your Macs have FireWire 800 ports, then yes. Otherwise there are FireWire 800 to 400, and 400 to 400 cables. Try Monoprice http://www.monoprice.com/products/search.asp?keyword=FireWire+&x=0&y=0

Any cheap cable works.

I'll be buying a 2011 iMac, so that's Firewire 800, and have a 2010 MacBook Pro ( is that Firewire 800?)

No just eject it/ unmount it from the other Mac

Since you are using the origin computer as a disk, the yes, eject and power down before removing cable. Did you even read the Apple support document I accessed? No more spoon feeding.

No, no, I did read it. It was just step 5 that had me confused:

5. On the computer you used as a disk, push the power button to shut it down, and then disconnect the FireWire cable.

Sorry about that.

And Firewire 800 is the way to go? Would a USB cable work too?
