My brother just came bak from his holiday in the States - once I read the iphone could be activated without AT&T contract I immediately asked him to get me one unit. He came back with 2 (one for himself).

I was quite nervous during the activation process given by DVD Jon - but to my amazement, it worked without a hitch! Both units now working as iphones, full wi-fi access, and use of google maps (i was also afraid that google maps would somehow be locked to USA maps - but works fine here in London).

So far I have been blown away by the user interface - it amazes me each time I use it. THe cover flow is simply fab! Such an innovative and easy way of navigating ones music collection. Google maps is also great - has always been my fav map program on desktop, and glad apple incorprated this in iphone. One slight dissapointment - well actually, two really - I cannot use my Sony studio earphones properly (they fit in fine - but can not be rotated at the Jack, so keep falling out when iphone in pocket) - secondly, i am an audiophile - and even with my studio earphones in the iphone, it is somewhat lacking a natural bass in traks - this is especially clear when listenining to same trak on my sony mp3 walkman. Hope apple can include this in a software update.

Thanks to all those putting a lot of effort to unlocking this baby - can't wait and thanx for also de-activating these. Am certain the UK people will fall head over heals when it officially arrives here at end of this year.

Hope you have fun with it! Too bad that EDGE doesn't work, but a WiFi iPhone is still better than no iPhone.

Maybe you can answer this question: Does Google maps show traffic information in Europe? Becasue AFAIK maps.google.com only supports this in the USA. Can you check if it works in The Netherlands?

Thanks,
Dr. Rengers

OMG where do you live in the UK? I might just have to come and steal your iPhone you lucky son of a $%$^&. I will just have to wait until Apple can be arsed to get their act together in the UK.

-What SIM are you using in the iPhone?

-Does SMS work? Because wouldn't you have to enter a network-specific (ie. UK network) SMS "message centre" number for this to work?

-Does Edge work (or GPRS)? I'm guessing not.

-What about number formatting, does it format UK mobile numbers and landlines to US-style when you get an incoming call/in address book?

Thanks.

I wonder if, when the official UK iPhone comes out, you'll be able to "update" your iPod to the UK-specific software that allows GPRS access, visual voicemail, etc.?

If you're not in the Netherlands this week, can you check if it works in my house? (essex!) :)

Go to Route on Saturday night. An ugly guy called Stuart will be parading his unlocked iPhone around for all and sundry.

I'm from Colchester :) Shipped him one last Friday - he got it today and used DVD Jon's unlocking process.

Just saw MarkW19's post - I'm not sure what the latest "hack" status is, but his personal T-Mobile SIM was rejected and he couldn't do much with the AT&T one.

Answering as many of the questions as I can before I shoot off to work - Google Maps did have the traffic update highlighted on the route i entered within London.

As for any info on SIM card accceptance / gprs - as mentioned in my earlier post - the phone function is the only thing not working on this hack (as for now) - everything else works, so unfortunetly, untill phone does not become un-locked i will not be able to give any answers to these questions.

I played around with the "phone" section of the unit - it dies auto-format numbers into the USA format - but u can turn this feature off in the settings - you can also change your time-zone to be where you are based.

Anybody actually got an AT&T contract, and has been abroad to UK????

Wonder how roaming works with data etc.

info please.

I'm sure we will see more and more of these posts as there is definitely demand and the exchange rate at the moment is pretty good for us UK people. Glad you got it activated. Will be really interesting to see how the unlocking of the phone works when it is finished.

Post pictures of the iPhone + something british (red telephone box w/wo prostitute cards or a black cab)

With the method he used, the iPhone won't have any phone capabilities. Hence, no voice calls, no SMS, no EDGE, or anything phone related.

Indeed - am also nervous on that front - hope unlocking it still means us europeans can use the phone features as apple intended and work smoothly (bar the visual voice mail - but if O2 do get the rights as reported - then as i am on O2 perhaps i may be able access while they test?)

As for pictures - my digital camera is on loan to friend and will get back this weekend so will post some then.

Oh, and keyboard is amazing - works exactly as they show on apple site - got writing with two thumbs in half hour! Much better than i thought it wud be at entering text.

I am in the London this week with my iPhone. Everything works just fine, but it comes at a price: data is being charged at $0.02/kb ($20/mb). Ouch. I find it amazing that I can get an unlimited international blackberry plan (EDGE), but not for the iPhone. Then again, if AT&T did have an unlimited international iPhone data plan, a bunch of Europeans would buy and activate with AT&T rather than wait for the launch over here.

As for performance, it seems like the EDGE network here isn't as snappy as ATT's, but I've never expected much from EDGE anyway.

I've am going to start charging £1 for each demonstration soon to offset the data costs.

so does this mean it is unlocked? And you can use the phone part too? I want to do that, but if i do as long as i use the AT&t sim the states, edge will work right? I just want it unlocked for when i travel

I'm another happy UK bod - be even happier when I can get it sim unlocked but even just with the wifi and ipod side of things, its ***** hot!
