One HOT (I mean REALLY hot) MacBook

Hi Everyone. The past few days I've noticed my Macbook's fans on FULL. I mean it is constantly blaring. Anyhow, I decided to throw open SMC Fan Control and guess what? My Macbook is running at a whopping 85 degrees celsius. I only am doing some web browsing and iChatting... Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Have you installed all firmware updates.. SMC updates, etc?

Is there a program that is not responding while it is running at that temperature? because it should not run that hot when your only web browsing. I notice that sometimes when a program is not responding and I close the lid of my MacBook pro it gets very hot and the fans run at full speed. If there isn't, then I suggest taking the computer to Apple for them to have a look at.

I checked Activity Monitor and all my apps are running normal. I mean if this was when I was using Photoshop or Aperture I wouldnt worry. But literally, I have one text IM open, and just one Safari window. Now the temperature is pushing 90 Celsius. Also, this has been doing this all day, as I already said.

my mom's macbook was doing that the other day, it turns out there's a dashboard-something (not a widget as far as i can tell), and once i force quit that, everything is good and normal...

check if anything is eating lots of processing power

Was Activity Monitor set to all processes or my processes? Have you tried restarting?

Pretty much guaranteed you have a process that is running at 100% CPU utilization in situations like these. Try a reboot (often its a process that "crashed" or is stuck in some sort of looP). If the reboot doesn't work, you'll have to try to isolate the process using Activity Monitor (Make sure to show all processes as someone else suggested).

Something similar happened on my Powerbook once. Activity Monitor revealed that the Finder was the culprit. Turned out it was a corrupted desktop item. I solved the problem by putting all the spare documents sitting on my desktop into a folder.

Slightly off topic here, but how do you rate Aperture running on the MacBook? I'm into photography too and was thinking about installing Aperture on my MacBook (2.0 C2D 2Gb RAM), but I'm not sure about how well the MacBook's display would handle the images, i.e. colour depth, gradients etc.

MBP 2.o with 2gigRAM. First gen. Runs HOT, into the high 80 centigrade, so I run smcFanControl. Aperture runs great on it with one big catch - don't open a file in Photoshop from Aperture. I export them instead because Aperture is a real dog while Photoshop is running.
