Video format compatibility.

Android devices can play mkv, avi, 720p/1080p...whatever. iOS still restricts you to mp4/m4v. For those who download (legally), almost all videos are in formats incompatible with iOS so you have to waste time converting them...which for a one hour HD video on your average laptop isn't a negligible amount of time. On Android I just download the file, copy it to my SD card, and I'm good to go. The apps that can play these files on iOS (VLC, AVPlayer HD, etc.) have all been removed from the App Store.

How is this not a more common talking point when it comes to Android vs iOS?

That's not entirely true. If you install AVPlayer HD it shows up in iTunes down towards the bottom of the apps page where you can associate files to specific apps. All you have to do is drag the videos to AVPlayer HD and you are good to go ;)

Not important (to me) at all.

Mainly cause I don't torrent.

I like buying movies (when I do) and then having them on iCloud. Or I just buy the blu-ray + digital copy.

Just download any of the myriad of apps on iOS that support more file formats. There's a rake of them....

Also out of interest.. what films / tv shows are available on torrents 'legally' ? Even if you own a DVD and want a digital copy, the distribution of copyrighted material is still not allowed. So downloading a torrent (even if you own the dvd format) is still breaking the copyright law.

There are a bunch of sites that offer free, legal torrents of open-licensed media - ClearBits, for example.

One feature that I love, which I could never do on my iPhone's is attach attach files to forums or other websites directly from the phone. You can also create zip's and upload them to the website directly from the phone. This is really a fantastic feature.

This is pretty important to me. I torrent movies and tv shows alot and I didn't think it was possible to get them on iOS (iphone or ipad). Sounds like it probably is but for me it's as simple as can be... drag and drop and watch :D

Get off your high horses. I can DVR and convert to mkv so I can play on my device and that's not stealing. That's why the VCR WAS LEGAL, wiki it in case u're too young to know what a dvr is. And if u say just convert to m4v, some people prefer different file types for their own reasons.

Back to the main question. I think Goodplayer and AirAV can play mkv files.

READ!!! The person said they were torrenting - I imagine without broadcaster or copyright holders consent.

Secondly you need to understand the law and I don't mean just by reading Wiki..

While you can make copies for yourself (such as backing up favorite shows to other media formats) and legally give them to family and friends, you may not charge them or anyone else for the copies. This would be considered unauthorized distribution and/or sale of copyrighted material, which is illegal. The same standard applies to public exhibitions, broadcast and file sharing on peer-to-peer networks. The penalties for copyright infringement are very tough indeed, so familiarize yourself with the law before making copies for any purpose other than personal home use.

So please don't go there sister.. [snaps fingers and turns head]

That's an unsubstantiated assumption you're making. As I mentioned above, there are plenty of torrent sites that offer legal, open-licensed TV/Movie content.

Besides, discussion of illegal downloading is forbidden on MacRumors.
I googled all of these - none of them can play HD mkv files.

The discussion of how to obtain illegal downloaded material is forbidden on MacRumors.

The discussion over the legality and morality is not.

It may be an assumption, but sounds clear enough. Besides again what TV shows are free to download on Torrents ?

Err yes they do. Download them and try rather than google....

----------

HD Player Pro supports 1080p MKV on most devices and is one of most popular.

OPlayer HD supports 720p MKV on iPad 2 and 1080 on iPad 3

1080MKV player err does exactly what it says in the name

Do I need to go on..... ?

That's what they're supposed to do, but none of those actually work. Every review I'm reading for all these players say that either they can't play HD mkvs, playback freezes, or it is too GPU intensive to work properly.

The reviews may be wrong or based on older outdated version. A lot of now implemented GPU hardware accelerated / assisted decoding.

HD Player Pro definetly works as I've played HD MKV files without any issues.

Looking at the list of TV shows on ClearBit - why would you want to watch any of them let alone in HD ;)

I was just actually thinking about this. My buddy actually said he was very annoyed with the fact that trying to play other video formats was such a hassle on his iPhone. He mentioned how it was a sketchy process all together. I think he went through at least 3 different apps that advertised to play mkv and none did the job properly. But forget having to grab an App to play different video formats, there is nothing better than your phone playing all the most popular video formats right out of the box.

I've never run into a video I couldn't play in iOS, even .flv files. Not that it's hard to find practically anything you want in .mp4 anyway.
