i have a macbook and a logictech mx400 laser mouse...ive been happy with it...except one thing...its a bit big for me to carry around at school..

im planning to get a mini optical and retractable mouse for when i am just at school to use on my macbook

here's my concern...by using a second mouse and thats optical, will it mess up the preferences for my current mouse....or will the preference setting be the same for both mice?

i dont want settings to keep switching around if this is the case...

input would help...thanks

Having been in a similar situation, I can say that you shouldn't have any problems. I used a M$ mouse for work, but an Apple Mighty Mouse at work and although the M$ mouse had it's own preference pane for settings, I had no problems. Don't forget, that you already are using two mice, because the trackpad is also there.

yeah pretty much i dont want the settings on the preferences to change...i know both mouses will have a different feel but as long as the settings dont change ill be happy

Well the settings are set for the system, not the mouse, so you should be fine. The M$ mouse I was talking about, only had it's own preferences for the extra buttons, everything else stayed the same.

the settings would not merge so you can have them with different settings.

even if you have two identical mice osx knows which is which

it even rembers which display i have connected and keeps my setting for that
