one of my external drives dose not mount

Without having to erase everything on the external drive anyway I can mount it or try to mount or recover the drive without having to reformat or erase the drive it would not mount not even while using disk utility and disk repair said can't repair?

What kind of a drive is it?
Is it a 3.5" drive or is it a 2.5" drive?
USB, or something else?
When you connect it, do you hear it spin up?
Does it use an external power supply?
