Im using Mac Pro 2010 and one of my HDD has a problem. I have no idea why but sometimes, I dont see the HDD in the finder until I restart the computer. I suspected the connection problem so I switched the slot and yet I'm still getting disconnection problem. This is totally random and happened quite often.

Do you think that HDD is dying? I bought it a few months ago.

What is the capacity of the HDD?
What brand/model?
What file format, HFS+?
What OS version?

Run a utility like DriveDx and you'll get a TON of information beyond SMART to let you know if the drive is failing or showing signs of failure. They also check against a database of known issues to alert when a POSSIBLE issue will present itself. Great utility. Highly recommended along with Carbon Copy Cloner.

idk
MacOS Mojave

This issue happened on Sierra, high sierra, and Mojave.

idk but not supported I guess

Select the disk, not partition or container.

Then you should able to see the SMART status.

Again, I’ve used that exact drive in the past. It reports SMART in DriveDx and I’m sure in others as well. A direct link to the .ZIP installer is above.

Keep trying - SMART has been standard on drives for a long, long time. The reason that the data sheet doesn't mention SMART is that "of course it supports SMART".

Well it seems Apple is not going to support Smart after 2016.

Even the original HDD from Mac Pro 2010 doesnt support SMART. Yes, all of my HDD does not support SMART at all.

Did you install DriveDx? Works with all versions of OSX/macOS from 10.6 on. Reports SMART and a ton of other drive health indicators. Direct .ZIP installer link is posted above.

Post screenshots of reports.

I just show you SMART still working in the latest Mojave.

And ALL my drives (including the original Apple HDD support SMART).

Do you have a link to this claim?

I find it hard to believe that Apple is blocking S.M.A.R.T.

I have high end HPE ProLiant servers, and all of the disks support SMART (and have for at least 10 years). In fact, the RAID controllers regularly monitor SMART and if SMART predicts a failure the controller will drop the drive, rebuild using a hot spare, and contact HPE support who will express ship me a replacement drive.

This usually happens before any error is seen by the OS. My first clue is the email from HPE support with the tracking number for the drive, and info on the location of the failing drives. (My servers have up to 200 drives, so the location info is useful.)

Website is partially down. Already contacted them. The .ZIP installer works without activation for several days.

Use SMARTReporter if not.

Link you sent is MacBOOK Pro specific and applies to those PCIe SSDs only. NOT HDDs in Mac Pro.

No issues on the HDD that I've been talking about but I had to restart Mac Pro for few times. Also, I have 3 HDD but other one is not connected.

The main issue is that one or two HDD does not connect that I have to shut down the computer and then turn it on till I get connections.

Drive will ONLY show on full cold boot? If so, that is expected behavior with many 4TB+ drives from past few years. That is a different issue. Some have used the “tape pin fix” to attempt to solve but it does NOT work well with HGST drives.
