Howdy,

I'm currently running a Jailbroken 3.0.1 iPhone 3GS. I just found out about blackra1n and would like to upgrade to 3.1.2, and jailbreak. My question is, must I restore my phone first, then upgrade, and then jailbreak? Or can I just upgrade from the jailbroken 3.0.1 to a clean 3.1.2 and then re-jailbreak?

Thank you.

DO NOT update to the official 3.1.2. Create the custom 3.1.2 firmware first, then restore from that. use pkgbackup from cydia to restore you jailbreak stuff

I am in the same boat. I've got a jailbroken 3.0.1 3G but would like to upgrade to 3.1.2. Since I'm on Windows I can't use PwnageTool 3.1.4. If I want to use blackra1n, I assume I will have to unjailbreak my phone by upgrading to 3.1.2 and then re-jailbreak with blackra1n?

Thanks.

Why? There is an unlock for 3.1.2 now. No reason not to update to it through iTunes.

I thought 3.1.2 was free. guess i was wrong:D. in that case buy and download the official firmware, but don't install it on your iphone until youve created the custom version. because it says on the dev-team's blog that you SHOULD NOT upgrade to the official 3.1.2 if you wanna continue to jailbreak in the future.

No, no, no. This is both outdated and wrong. It used to be true that you should not upgrade to the official firmware because there was no unlock for the upgraded 5.11.07 baseband and it was not known if there ever would be. A perfectly functional unlock named blacksn0w has now been released by Geohot, and is available both through his blackra1n jailbreak utility and through Cydia.

There is also absolutely no problem with upgrading to 3.1.2 jailbreak-wise. Geohot's blackra1n jailbreak application jailbreaks all devices running 3.1.2, from the iPhone 2G to the brand new iPod Touch 3. And the Dev Team's PwnageTool v. 1.4 also will pwn a phone on 3.1.2 official so that it can later be restored to a pwned firmware. There is absolutely no worry in upgrading your phone to 3.1.2 official now.

To sum up: 3.1.2 now poses no problems either for jailbreaking or for unlocking.

Bump. Can I download a custom firmware for 3.1.2 somewhere and upgrade without losing my jailbreak?

Um, no. Any upgrade/restore, whether with official firmware or custom ones, would wipe all your current jailbreak apps, and you have to reinstall them again. Using AptBackup (free) or PkgBakup (paid) to backup your jailbreak apps can make the process a bit easier, but there's no way around this entirely.
