One thing I can't figure out is how can Apple and their competitors can be up to their eyeballs in lawsuits against each other, yet Apple uses them to manufacturer parts?

Samsung is (possibly) the sole provider for the new Retina display on the iPad 2. (https://www.macrumors.com/2012/03/13/samsung-sole-supplier-for-retina-display-in-new-ipad/)
Is it just that Samsung will make so much from Apple, that they are able to put those lawsuits aside? Also with Google Maps being used, I know Apple is trying to steer away from it, but couldn't Google just pull the plug on Apple from using its Mapping? They too seem to have a few lawsuits against each other.

There are a few other examples, I just forget what they are right now....but you get the idea.

Different businesses, different divisions. Businesses still operate out of pragmatism, not morality. There is no reason for the latter. It's business. Even when it's business with thieves.

Companies aren't people.

To expand on *LTD*'s comments....

It's not that they necessarily want to destroy the other company. They just want that company to either 1) Pay for using the patent, or 2) Stop using the patent altogether. But it's not about bankrupting the other company.

Often what happens is they end up with cross-licensing agreements. This is actually an anti-competitive practice in that they can effectively lock other companies out of the market altogether.

I think if Apple had a choice, they'd want to stop using Samsung as a manufacture. But Samsung as a manufacture is one of the best out there.
