OK, this is my fourth day owning an iPhone and I still can't get activated. I spent many hours searching forums because the only support resources listed in the iPhone packaging was web based. Then, I looked for "the new ATT" support phone number and called them. I spent many hours on support with Apple. Finally, I spent many hours on support with "the new ATT." Still, I don't have any service. I very frustrated.

I last spoke with "the new ATT" support around 18 hours ago. They told me to wait another day and hope that I'll have service. I'm tempted to call back soon anyway to see if they made any progress.

It took me & my son 4 days also. I finally just got on the phone with AT&T, told them I was going away the next day & this is ridiculous!!! I need it activated. Well that worked. Call them & tell them you want it done.

OK, I called "the new AT&T" again and eventually they said that everything looked ok on their end. So, they are now sending me back to Apple Care to deal with the problem. I'm on hold as I type this.

that sucks, sorry to hear that

if you want help, you could state your situation, business plan? porting? old at&t blue customer? family plan?

all of those could cause problems.

Any particular reason you type AT&T as "the new AT&T" is that supposed to be witty or funny?

From http://www.corp.att.com/history/history5.html :

A Brief History: The New AT&T
...
The new AT&T began evolving from a long distance company to an integrated voice and data communications company, as an ever increasing percentage of the traffic on its network was data, and to a lesser extent video, rather than voice.
...

So what, is it all of a sudden hilarious to type it that way? AT&T is AT&T.

For those who don't know the history behind Ma' Bell and the current megacorp called "The New AT&T"... AT&T is nowhere near new. AT&T as it stands now, isn't owned by any company that AT&T itself didn't spawn.

AT&T was found guilty of being an illegal monopoly and was broken up into the "Baby Bells". Bell South and SBC were two of them. AT&T sold its wireless to Cingular, and Cingular was jointly owned by Bell South and SBC. SBC buys AT&T, renames itself AT&T, and buys Bell South, assuming sole ownership of Cingular. It rebrands Cingular as AT&T... and this combined with other purchases/etc, we practically have Ma' Bell back.

...AT&T was found guilty of being an illegal monopoly and was broken up into the "Baby Bells"...

I don't think it's accurate to say AT&T was found guilty of being an illegal monopoly as the 1974 antitrust was settled when AT&T agreed to divesture in 1982. But if you have a reasonable reference that shows a finding of guilt I'll stand corrected.

Just wondering why it is taking you so many days?

Are you close to an Apple store? Do you have the new version of itunes?

Are you transfering the phone number or is it a new account?

Wow, it's funny that so many people are making a big deal about "the new AT&T." It turns out that one of the many problems that caused the delay in activation was that "the new AT&T" is very different from the old AT&T Wireless. I was with the old one and still had my old phone and rate plan. When Cingular bought them, all customers were offered incentives to buy a new phone and migrate to Cingular. I never did that. Cingular and "the new AT&T" use SIM cards and locked phones that are not compatible with the old AT&T. I had other issues too, but I finally have service after four days on customer support. Woohoo!

is there a reason why apple wants you to activate a CELL PHONE? this isnt an operating system where you can pirate the software or anything similar. since when do you have to activate a phone you just spent half a grand on?

anyways, if you are tired of screwing around with apple and AT&T just hack the thing. there are lots of these sites out there,

http://zedomax.com/blog/2007/06/30/iphone-hack-how-to-activate-your-iphone-immediately/

http://www.hackszine.com/blog/archive/2007/07/activate_iphone_on_a_prepaid_p.html

activate the phone on a prepaid would be the best if you dont call or surf on edge that much. $80/mo is hard to swollow for such a limited device (you can pay $80 and surf much faster was well as teather to a laptop. $80 is $80 you should get the most out of it not settle for 3rd best)

Please stay on the post topic. Very bad forum lately.

Anyway, NEILP, you need to get smart on your specific area of trouble. Like the previous post stated, is it porting, old ATT "blue" plan, etc? Then you need to share that in this forum. Or, do what I did and finally raise hell with the ATT folks. They first had my plan screwed up, then had a discount associated that was not allowed, then had my IMEI# input incorrectly. Great phone, but the ATT end was VERY painful for me. And I've been an ATT customer for about 9 years!!
