One week with 24" 2.8 iMac - My input/notes

So I've had it for a week now. The 'amazement' still hasnt really worn off. Here are my notes:

-No magnet for the remote, however, the thickness of the iMac is exactly as thick as the remote. I have my remote laying down on top of my iMac.
-Graphic card does -not- suck, as people were intially worried. The drivers are not very 'mature' on the Mac side, and the Windows side has a bit more tweaking left. All my windows games run fantastic, and WoW runs great in Macosx. (20 more fps in Windows, though.)
-The glare is NOT an issue. I had to make a small adjustment to my room (ie - close the blinds during bright sunny days) - but it's great.
-Screen brightness IS an issue. No, it's not too dim, it's TOO BRIGHT! I see a software update 'fixing' this in the future. In its dimmest setting, the screen is still brighter than my MBP in its BRIGHTEST setting. I mean, thats not necessarily a 'bad' thing, but hey ;D
-The keyboard kicks ass. Amazing to type with. I call it "Back to basics" because this is exactly what an old archaic keyboard should have been. Perfectly flat, very simple.

Great investment. No complaints what-so-ever. I feel as if its a perfect package, with nothing major to complain about.

If you're 'considering' - just do it. I did the whole "ah, screw it" - and charged the sucker. It might be a while til I pay it off, but it's a joy to 'own'

god dammit...i really wish i NEEDED one but my iMac G5 (powerpc) is still holding strong....i have been noticing more and more crashes though with apps.....and its starting to slow down, maybe thats just me trying to think of excuses though.

Dude this 2.8 is BLAZING FAST. Like omg.

I was searching for ideas for a site I was designing. I googled something, and just held down the apple key as I opened up over 100 tabs

Come October I hope AAPL has gone back a bit higher because I'm ready to dump some shares for that bad boy (with Leopard). I've used one twice at an Apple Store and it blows me away.

I'm so happy to hear a good report! Mine should be here any day now. I ordered on the 8th through a local Mac only retailer. Should've ordered direct from Apple for faster delivery. All good things come in time.

Glad your loving it. I still can't get close to one, Maybe it's the lighting at the Apple store I go to, but from 5-7 feet away the glare on the screen hurts my eyes. Heh, the store employees think I'm trying not to look at it because I want one, then I ask them how their heads feel.

I bought the 20" model and I love mine too! I'm coming from the PC world and I've never enjoyed a PC as much as I've been enjoying my new Imac!!

I have had my 2.8 iMac for almost a week, and I love it too.

I was concerned about some of the things I heard on this forum about the graphics card and glossiness, but i have to say that they were unfounded. Graphics card performs great, and I haven't noticed the glossy screen even once. OK, well I did notice it once, but turning it on solved that problem.

The only complaint I can think of is that I cant keep track of my remote. I can never remember were I put it. If only the iMac had a magnet. Maybe I should have waited till they made a model that included one.

Just put it on top of the iMac! Done deal!

So far only problems I've had are:

- kernel panic (happened when I was installing about 3 things at once, surfing the net, updating the software and listening to music)
- display overheated and became discoloured (happened 72 hours after I turned the computer on, seeing it was on for 72 hours straight)
- safari crashes if trying to open GMAIL

Other then that, I really enjoy my new iMac

My guess is that you would lose your remote even if it had a magnet on the side Making a dedicated place to put your remote is essentially the same thing.

Nice to hear from another happy iMac customer!

I had a friend up to visit me yesterday. He is a long time PC user (like back to the Amstrad PC1512 days like me...) and he was so blown away by the machine and OS X that he is going to buy BOTH a Macbook for his wife and an iMac or MBP for himself! I only spent a couple of hours showing him around and he walked away shaking his head and muttering about all the time he has wasted messing about with PC's... I had to agree!

The thing that really blew his mind was when I imported some photo's into iPhoto and then sent the "Event" to iDVD and a couple of clicks later (literally) I had a beautiful musical presentation of photo's with background music and DVD menu all ready to burn onto a DVD. He had just done something similar on his PC and it took him weeks!

I love my iMac!

Incorrect. There are magnets that hold the glass display on, but the iMac remote doesnt have enough magnetic pull to stick. (Oddly, my Zune remote does though!)

Simply put the iMac remote on top of the iMac. It's the perfect width, stays out of the way, and unless you shake your iMac around... it wont go anywhere

Strange - in the post I read the user discovered by accident when his remote did stick. I guess there must be a variation in the magnets' strengths.

I have to agree with the OP in everything he said.

I am a windoze-switcher and since moving over to the mac last week, when I got my iMac, I have never been happier.

This computer is glorious! The screen glare is not relevant in my room. The keyboard is very responsive and I enjoy typing on it. It really does feel comfortable. This 24" screen is freaking massive and I utilize all of the real estate it offers.

OS X is taking a bit to get used to but that is expected given my recent switch.

I love it! Nothing to complain about here.
