This would be a secondary device (main device - iPhone 8 Plus). I know both devices have their benefits and drawbacks, but it's £449 for the 5T and the discounted S8 would be around £470. I've used Android here and there but want to try it again since iOS is growing a bit boring for me.

From what I can tell, the differences are:

Benefits of the 5T - Larger screen, more RAM, closer to stock Android, Dash charge.

Benefits of the S8 - Better screen, great camera, water resistance, expandable storage, wireless charging (won't use).

I used them both briefly in-store today and came away liking the 5T more, but I know that in-store usage is completely different with different conditions, etc. If anyone has these two devices or has tried them, feedback on them would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If I was in your shoes, I would go with the Samsung. I've briefly used a S7 and it's a top notch device and played around with a OnePlus 5. I felt the overall quality and experience was better with the Samsung device.

Also, any warranty work is much easier to get done through Samsung and they are pretty good at providing updates. OnePlus - not so much.

Both are great phones at the end of the day. You can't really go wrong with either one.

Warranty on OP is great actually. Used it, and pretty smooth experience.
As far as updates go, OP3 and OP3T are already on Oreo, and my Note didn't receive any updates since I've bought it, Oreo will come in 6 months if I'm being lucky :)

As for the answer to this topic:
I would go for OP5T. Camera isn't as great as on S8 for sure, but you got your iPhone for that. Near stock android, faster and more fluid experience.

But then again, it all depends on what you value more out of device.

I'd get the 5T

Any opinions or usage to expand on that?

I definitely like a fast feeling phone, but features also matter of course. I do feel like I'd prefer closer to stock Android and then that way I could learn and customise it more over time with different launchers (offtopic slightly but love that Pixel 2 launcher). The Samsung I know has great features, but also has some bloat so it's a tough call.

I would get the s8, it is the much more balanced device (for android). The 5t is just doing speed for marketing purposes and not any real benefit to the user.

There is some bloat but you can disable most of them.

Is it possible to get rid of the bloat and install another launcher, or has Samsung restricted that? Don't feel like I've ever seen a Samsung device on the Google launcher aside from the PLAY editions years ago.

There are more S8s out there than OPs - safety in numbers. Non stock Android is non-stock, doesn't matter how far it deviates really (to me at least) .. heck some Touchwiz stuff (or whatever it's called now) is even NICE. Never thought I'd say that when I had my last Samsung phone (S4). S8 will be worth more when you come to upgrade also so possibly lower TCO if that is a factor.

5T for more RAM and better software.

Michael Fisher and Dave Lee do not like Samsung software. They ruin Android's reputation with a bloated skin full of apps we don't need and that will lag over time.

My favorite Android combo would involve a Google Pixel with either LG or Sony.

Google Pixel 2 or 2 XL
LG V30
Essential PH-1
Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact
Nokia 8
Samsung Galaxy Note8

Avoid Huawei and Xiaomi. They use an iTunes-like PC Suite.

Favorite Android OEMs
Google
LG
Nokia
Motorola
Sony
Samsung
HTC
Huawei
Xiaomi
Oppo

You can install other launchers but you can't uninstall the default launcher. You can just not use it and forget about it, but it still takes up storage space.

Still struggling to decide lol. Both are great devices, with the S8 being the slightly more expensive one, but that does get a better camera and it's a more premium device. Would still have my iPhone though. New 5T for £449 or Refurbished S8 for £479. Would prefer a new S8 but that's £560 which is more than I'd like to spend on a secondary device.

I am thinking maybe get the 5T and if I feel it's lacking maybe return and go for the S8 Refurbished?

It comes down to the camera.

The Samsung camera is amazing. The OnePlus camera is solid.

If you don't care about the camera that much, it sound like (from what you've said) you'd probably like the 5T more in most respects.

I'd go with the 5T - it is closer to stock Android than the S8. For a lot of iOS converters, its best to stick to as close to stock Android as possible to enjoy it. All of the settings on the S8 are eventually going to annoy you. But, hey, its a secondary device, so maybe you will enjoy all the extra features over the near stock Android (5T).

Gonna be ordering the S8 refurbished based on its a overall better phone with water resistance, better camera, etc. Nearly ordered the 5T but felt I’d be taking the cheaper option which missed out on several things. Should be ordering within the next few days. Everyone's thoughts and opinions are much appreciated!

Looking forward to getting it and diving into the world of Android. Anyone have any tips or suggestions to help me have a good experience?
