Low Price, High Hopes for OnePlus Phone

Carl Pei, who directs the global division, said that of OnePlus’s global staff, a third of the employees are from Asia, a third from Europe and a third from the United States. “We don’t really think of ourselves as a Chinese start-up,” he said.

After winning a few glowing reviews this year in the American and European tech press, the One became a sensation among techies far beyond China. “Very soon our sales outside of China will surpass sales in China,” Mr. Pei said during a recent interview.

While he would not provide exact sales numbers, Mr. Pei said the One was selling in the “mid-to-high four figures a day in the U.S.,” which he said constituted 30 percent of the company’s market. That would imply sales of 150,000 to 300,000 phones a month in the United States, and up to a million devices a month over all — a rounding error in the global smartphone business, but an admirable feat for a tiny, year-old start-up.

OnePlus One gave away 20,000 invites last week and it was gone in just 48 minutes. It would have disappeared even sooner if more people heard about this giveaway.

The OnePlus company has been treated like they're Apple. Glowing reviews that ignore any drawbacks the phone has. Praising it excessively when other than price, there's nothing special, in fact they've never identified it as the phablet it is. The only honest comment was how hated the random highly bungled invite system is.

Simply sharing my personal experience with the one I ordered, it was far and away the worst quality, buggy phone I've ever bought.

I wouldn't be surprised. OPO played it safe with the invite system. When the new OPO comes out next year, I'm sure they will be better prepared and there won't be any invite system. At least, I hope.

They don't really sell a lot of phones, better prices with other company's in country's like China, India and Latin America.

Honestly I don't expect this guy's to be around for long.

If they didn't have non-existent support and call the yellow banding issue a feature of the phone then it'd be on my list as one of the best I've used.

OPO could have could have reached 5M sold worldwide months ago if they produced enough handsets and took out the invite system.

Nexus devices are also limited to countries with the same bargain price point. OnePlus' first phone did sell much better than Nexus One of 135k initially. Nexus devices were never blockbusters either until the Nexus 4 initially sold at $299 and they too have drawbacks (camera, battery life).

On an interview 2 weeks ago or so they said that they'll keep the invite system for the OnePlus Two too.

It was on a reddit interview.

Oh no! :( That's bad. But, hey, they know what's best for their company.

OP - what do you mean "OnePlus One to outsell the Nexus 6 worldwide?"
The article says nothing about Nexus sales. What do predict Nexus 6 sales to be?

Gotta love articles based on guessing and conjecture. There is a name for that; 'clickbait'.

That seems a bit harsh. The title of the article hardly strikes me as clickbait: "Low Price, High hopes for OnePlus One Phone"

Having just read the article it seems very balanced - including pointing out the downsides of OnePlus One (lack of customer service, uncertainty over long term business plan).

OP is absolutely correct. Nexus 5 has been discontinued and out of stock in many places, of course a phantom phone like Oppo One Plus One is outselling Nexus 5.

I got my OnePlus One recently, and this would be the biggest screen I would use, for now. (I'm still growing.. xD)
With the leaks pointing to a near 6inch screen for the phone.. It's too big. The biggest I'd use is the Note 4.

I'm starting to think OP has a vested interest in the company.

It's because I own 11% of OnePlus outstanding shares.

I also like the phone and their business model of "high end smartphone at break-even" price. Nexus 5 does a good job of it. OnePlus does it even better.

Nexus-5.jpg

OnePlus is selling about 800,000 - 1,000,000 smartphone a month worldwide. About 50% of that is in China. 30% in the USA. Can Google sell that many Nexus 6 each month?

p.s. Production has been ramped up. Supply has increased tremendously.
With pre-order coming within 2 weeks, OnePlus is on the up and up.

Let's hope they have enough money to keep running the company since I want to get a return on my 11% shares. Selling a high end smartphone at break-even isn't likely to generate profits anytime soon.

It took Amazon many years before it is profitable.

Is Amazon even profitable?

One plus? Lol, if someone gave me one I'd regift it unopened.

They could sell a trillion and I wouldn't consider one for a few good reasons.

Well that explains the complete unwavering bias in ALL your posts .......
Can we attach value to someone's opinions if they have a vested interest in a phone they review or post about? It puts all of the future opinions at risk knowing the opinions are biased.....

But.....i didn't know OnePlus was a publicly traded company......

I have one, no yellow banding, and it's pretty decent.

Have had all of the nexus phones, I prefer it to them, CM is well done. Haven't had an app crash or force close yet, very stable, and you can tweak the heck out of it.

Pricing is disruptive and it's going to significantly change the market.

Agree with you! I love my OPO....it is a great phone....

But this thread is deceiving......
How can you compare sales of an existing device (OPO) to an not yet released phone that we don't not even know what the final specs will be? We don't know what the N6 will be........its all just rumors.......

Yep, sort an over the top post, but not entirely off base, the nexus line has never been a high volume one, more of a proof of concept Google uses to push the industry.

I was offered an invite and turned it down. I got an invite this week via email and didnt get it. I may have if they didnt screw the pooch with their messed up method but it was too late for me to care.

That completely explains you constantly spewing out biased info....whether it is true or not. Your no better than spammers that come here and post links to their products.

To come back to initial question, it could be the case depending on Nexus 6 pricing.
If well priced OPO will be hammered if too pricey Nexus 6 will offer a second life to OPO and a nice launch track to OP2

Beside owning 11% of OnePlus, I also own 0.011% of Xiaomi judging by my "fandom" of it.

I also own 0.00011% of Google since I'm also a "fan" of the Nexus 4 and 5.

Anyway, is it so hard to believe that OnePlus One will outsell Nexus 6?

1) China is the #1 smartphone market in the world. OnePlus sell more than 50% of their smartphone in China.

2) They are selling about 750,000 to 1,000,000 smartphone each month according to the New York Times.

3) Their production is still going up.

4) Demand for the phone is still high.

5) Nexus 6 price will be on the high end (maybe $449).

6) OnePlus has hired people in India. They are looking to launch there sometimes in Nov/Dec. India is the 3rd largest smartphone market right now.
