Had a chance to use a new Nexus 7.

Here's a couple quick benchmark tests I tried....

Javascript Counting primes to 1000000
http://www.itwriting.com/primetest/countprimes.html
IPad 4 ... 6.5 seconds
New Nexus 7 ... 2.5 seconds
Galaxy Note 8 ... 2.5 seconds

HTML5 Fishbowl set to 100fish
http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/performance/fishbowl/
IPad 4 ... 50fps
New Nexus 7 ... 20fps
Galaxy Note 8 ... 17fps (Chrome)

Despite the higher screen density on the Nexus 7, I prefer the uniform brightness and fonts on the iPad.

My iPad Mini did 15fps set at 100 fish, and counted the primes in 11.27 seconds.

Edit: I followed the link to the fish, and it wasn't set to 100 fish. Correction has been made.

Comparing a $229 mid-range tablet (Don't forget the Nexus 10 which is Google's flagship) to a $500 Apple flagship is pretty impressive. Shows you how far Google is ahead of Apple. Just imagine the Nexus 10 refresh.

Check the Nexus 7 in a month. :p The people at The Verge aren't entirely optimistic, but who knows... I just don't like 7" tablets with the Nexus' aspect ratio. My iPod 5G's screen is aggravating to use as a tablet for more than the quickest tasks, but it has other redeeming qualities.

EDIT: I'm on my 13" rMBP now (2013 i5 model), and getting 42fps with 100 fish, and counted primes in .52 seconds. Weird...

I was going to buy to new nexus 7 , but i dont know, there too many bugs in android that i hate and the fact that the play store haves totally no french content for canada, im in quebec , as oppose to apple that haves plenty of it.
I feel more at home with apple.
Plus i have the apple tv3 and a mac so for me its better like that , everything is synced together.
I had the first gen nexus 7 and sold it to get an ipod touch 5g and i can say that i prefer ios, its more stable.
I will wait for the new ipad mini.

If only specs mattered.

I'll stick to playing Limbo rather than running benchmarks.

Please tell me you are joking? Specs are what makes the tablet market go round. Either way if this is another software argument it is pretty easy to install iOS on an Android device anyway.

But before you guys all think I'm an Android fanboy I would quite happily look at getting the next iPad but only if it catches up with current specs.

Now only if iPhone would catch up.

Looks like the specs came at a cost, which may also point to why the retina iPad Mini is delayed.

The Nexus 7 battery life dropped by more than 40%. http://allthingsd.com/20130730/googles-new-nexus-7-the-budget-tablet-to-beat/

Surely you're joking. Specs don't matter? Then why the **** is apple even announcing the new cpu specs and coming out with new hardware. That is just a troll post.

Did the same tests with my iPad 4 running iOS 7 beta 4
Counting primes to 1000000 took 0,792 sec
100 fishes: 60 fps

I know you have a screenshot there for evidence but that massive drop in time I doubt is possible just through the iOS 7 upgrade. Even so I would imagine some older computers would probably get beaten by that.

Sure it's possible because of serious optimizations in the JavaScript engine.
If somebody else with iOS 7 can try the same test, it's proven.

Btw: my iP5 (also iOS 7) gets 0,861 sec.

It's not a troll post.

Specs don't matter, what matters is the experience.

What can the device do?
How does it do it?
What is it like to download an app?
What is it like to browse photos?
How do you email a photograph?
How does the hardware feel in your hand?
How you I connect with the device?
etc.

Apple increases the specs each year, not to win benchmark tests, not to compete on meaningless numbers, but to make the experience better, to make the device more capable, to open up new possibilites, to become a better device.

The people looking at these numbers can't see the wood for the trees.

No amount of cores will change the fact I can't play Limbo on it, or use any of the other apps Android lacks.

These other companies are still talking speeds and feeds like they did during the PC days, but Apple isn't. They tell you what the iPad can do, they tell you how easy it is to use, how it has hundreds of thousands of apps and how it can fit into your life.

Either way it is worrying that the iPad originally only got 6.5 seconds on this test as it must have been pretty poorly optimised considering iOS is supposed to be the most optimised mobile OS.

Edit: To the above: so essentially you are saying that specs do matter because they improve the user experience?

No, i'm saying that the experience matters.

I'm saying having better specs can be one way to improve an experience, but there plenty of other factors too, mostly through software and design.

BINGO! We have a winner. I was co-owner of a bicycle shop during the 1990's, and can tell you that most customers bought based on brand name, color, and whether it was available in carbon fiber. Specs interested me, but not customers. In fact, it wasn't uncommon for a customer to walk in and as for a carbon fiber bike. They often didn't care if it was a road bike or mountain bike! That's how the average customer shops. Oh Yeah.... Trek is over-priced and under-spec'd, but people want that name on their bikes.

I'm not saying the iPad is an inferior product. It's fine that Asus gave Google an HD screen ahead of Apple's next release. Apple doesn't run on Google's schedule, and I'd be willing to bet that this Nexus 7 will be forgotten very quickly when Apple introduces its new products in a couple of months. Just to get back to specs for a second, I'm interested in how quickly the new Nexus opens a web page compared to the Mini. I watched several Nexus reviews on YouTube last night, and while they all had a Mini next to the Nexus, none showed that simple test. Maybe I'll stop buy BB on the way home, and try for myself.

Welp looks like it's Google's turn to catch up again.

Was speed ever an issue with the iPhone? Was speed ever an issue with the iPad 4? The biggest issue is that you have an iPhone 5s with the same screen, iPad 5 with the same screen and iPad mini with the same screen. These are all the same products but with faster guts. Finger print scanners and smaller bezels is not enough.

I think his point is that not many customers are going to buy an iPad based on a benchmark. For example no customer is going to care about the new Mini clocking in at ~1 second they will care about it having a retina display.

Thanks for posting that.
I was not a fan of the new iOS 7 look, but glad it offers speed increases.

Anyone have an iPad 1 or iPad 3 on iOS 5, I recall it was faster than a 4 on iOS 6?
