Anyone know how to take advantage of the full (or at least closer to) speed from Verizon Fios? We just got our new verizon router and 150mbps service, but it only shows at 94 or so. The installer said there may be some issues with OS X/firewalls and etc, and to google for solutions. Anybody know about the issue/solutions?

thanks!

The actual speed for 100Mbps would be around 90-95Mbps after you subtract overhead.

Are you directly connected or is there a router/switch along the way? Are you using long runs (over 100 feet) with only CAT5e? Does your laptop/desktop have a 1000Mbit port or is it just 100Mbit? Alternatively, does the server you are accessing have speeds over 100Mbps?

Seems unlikely that FIOS comes with a 100Mbit LAN port when they use a 1000Mbit WAN port for 150Mbps service.

Okay it's the cables as you suggest! I haven't tested it connected directly yet, but over wifi I get 150 or so with the verizon router, 25 with my 'n' apple extreme. Connected to ethernet it's around 95 or so.

What complicates things here is that in the evenings, things drop off dramatically. the installer said fios shouldn't have that happen, that you're not sharing bandwidth the way you do with other technologies (dsl/cable?) I don't know, I'm going to test it over the next few evenings. And will check on the various cables between the router and the iMac i'm on most of the time.

Thanks all!

One more tip, although it's not always "ideal". On my wireless routers, my 2.4 & 5GHz networks are segregated/separated as to take advantage of the fewer conflicts amongst my neighbors and the wider bandwidth available on the 5GHz network.

On my Comcast Performance account (150 D/20 U) I realize about 1/3-1/2 of that on 2.4GHz and the full 175 D/25 U on 5GHz, utilizing one of the many Flash-based speed test sites - and I'm seeing those speeds on my 2012 Mini Server with Wireless N or my rMBP with Wireless AC. I see similar results with both my latest-Gen AC Extreme and my 4th-Gen Extreme (wireless N).

I'd suggest that you try using Airport Utility to separate the two networks - I named mine "Fast" and "Faster" so I can tell them apart and try your Airport again...
